What is a dexamethasone suppression test Test in Patna ?
What is dexamethasone suppression test?
The dexamethasone suppression test checks how your body controls cortisol, a stress hormone. It measures whether cortisol falls after taking a small dose of dexamethasone. It is particularly important for people with diabetes or hypertension, the two leading causes of chronic kidney disease in India, responsible for over 60% of cases requiring dialysis.
What does dexamethasone suppression test measure?
Cortisol helps regulate blood pressure, blood sugar, and inflammation. Too much cortisol can cause weight gain, high blood pressure, weak bones, and mood changes. Doctors use this test to find causes of high cortisol, such as Cushing syndrome. It can help tell whether the problem comes from the pituitary, the adrenal glands, or elsewhere.
What symptoms suggest dexamethasone suppression test may be needed?
A doctor may recommend dexamethasone suppression test when a patient reports ankle or leg swelling, reduced urine output, frothy or foamy urine, persistent fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, persistent itching, muscle cramps, and high blood pressure. In Patna, you can book this test online with home collection available in Rajendra Nagar, Phulwari Sharif, and beyond.
How is dexamethasone suppression test performed?
For dexamethasone suppression test, a GetVisit phlebotomist in Rajendra Nagar or Phulwari Sharif, Patna applies a soft tourniquet, disinfects the site, and collects a small blood sample into a vacuum tube. The visit takes only a few minutes and you can return to your day straight away.
How accurate is dexamethasone suppression test?
For dexamethasone suppression test, a very high-protein meal or vigorous exercise shortly before testing can nudge kidney markers, so keep to your usual routine. GetVisit's NABL labs in Rajendra Nagar and Phulwari Sharif, Patna maintain calibrated equipment and quality control.
Are there any risks to dexamethasone suppression test?
This is a low-risk procedure whether done at a lab in Rajendra Nagar or by home collection in Phulwari Sharif, Patna. The only intervention is the blood draw. Side effects are limited to a brief pinch and an occasional small bruise that resolves in 24 to 48 hours. Patients on anticoagulants should hold light pressure for 3 to 5 minutes after the draw.
Did you know?
Take dexamethasone exactly as your clinician instructs, commonly 1 mg orally at 23:00 the night before.

Why Take a dexamethasone suppression test Test in Patna ?
When does a doctor order dexamethasone suppression test?
dexamethasone suppression test is part of an endocrine evaluation for suspected Cushing syndrome and related disorders. Doctors order it when patients have unexplained weight gain, high blood pressure, easy bruising, muscle weakness, or mood changes.
Who should get dexamethasone suppression test done in Patna?
Seasonal water-quality issues, hot summers, and rising diabetes and hypertension rates together raise chronic kidney-disease and stone risk in Patna. Those who benefit most from regular dexamethasone suppression test testing include diabetics, hypertensives, older adults, and anyone with swelling, frothy urine, or a previous abnormal kidney result. Early detection in Patna allows intervention long before symptoms of kidney failure appear.
What conditions can dexamethasone suppression test help diagnose?
It helps distinguish pituitary, adrenal, or ectopic causes of high cortisol. Abnormal results can come from hormone-producing tumors, some medicines, severe stress, or certain illnesses. A family history of endocrine tumors may prompt earlier testing.
What do dexamethasone suppression test results mean?
Your result is read against the reference range printed on your GetVisit report for your age and sex, and always alongside your symptoms and history. A single value slightly outside the range does not by itself confirm a problem, your doctor decides whether it is significant. The specific high and low patterns for this test are explained in the FAQs below.
How often should dexamethasone suppression test be repeated?
Adults with no risk factors and a normal result: annually from age 30. Diabetics and hypertensives: at least once a year, often every 6 months. Patients with known kidney disease: at the interval set by their nephrologist. Anyone starting a drug cleared by the kidneys: at baseline and periodically thereafter.
What happens after your dexamethasone suppression test results are ready?
Once your results appear in your GetVisit profile, discuss them with your doctor or a GetVisit-verified specialist. Your doctor will interpret each value in the context of your full health history, current medications, and symptoms, and advise on the next step: lifestyle change, repeat testing, medication adjustment, or specialist referral. All GetVisit reports are stored permanently and can be shared with any doctor instantly.
