Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulphate ( DHEA-S )

Normal DHEAS depends on age and the lab’s reference range. Typical female ranges (µg/dL): 18–29: ~65–380; 30–39: ~45–270; 40–49: ~32–240; 50–59: ~26–200; ≥60: ~13–130. Values vary by assay, so always compare results to the lab’s reference and discuss abnormal results with your clinician for context and follow‑up.

High DHEA (an adrenal androgen) can cause androgenic effects: acne, oily skin, increased facial/body hair, scalp hair thinning, deepening voice, and menstrual irregularities or virilization in women. It may trigger mood swings, irritability, and libido changes. Persistently elevated levels can signal adrenal disorders (e.g., adrenal tumor, congenital adrenal hyperplasia) and may raise cardiovascular and metabolic risks; medical evaluation is advised.

A DHEAS test measures dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, an adrenal-produced steroid, to evaluate adrenal androgen output in women. It’s used when investigating excess hair growth, irregular periods, virilization, or unexplained infertility. Elevated levels can indicate adrenal tumors, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, or PCOS; low levels suggest adrenal insufficiency. Results help direct further endocrine testing and imaging.

Markedly elevated DHEA‑S—generally more than three times the laboratory’s upper limit of normal (often roughly >700–1,000 µg/dL, depending on assay and age/sex)—strongly suggests an adrenal tumor. Mild or moderate elevations are less specific and require additional endocrine evaluation and imaging to distinguish tumors from other causes of hyperandrogenism. Consult endocrinology for interpretation and management.

DHEAS is often normal or mildly elevated in PCOS; there’s no single diagnostic cutoff. Mild elevations up to roughly 200–600 µg/dL (or slightly above your lab’s upper limit) can be seen with PCOS. Marked elevations—commonly >600–700 µg/dL—raise concern for adrenal causes (for example, an adrenal tumor) and prompt additional evaluation. Interpret results against the lab reference range and clinical features.

Typical research-based dosing for women with diminished ovarian reserve is 25 mg of DHEA taken three times daily (total 75 mg/day), though some clinicians use 25–50 mg/day. Treatment is often started several weeks (commonly 8–12) before assisted reproduction. DHEA can cause androgenic side effects and isn’t suitable for hormone-sensitive conditions; discuss risks, monitoring, and interactions with your fertility specialist.
