Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)

DHEA is an adrenal steroid hormone used as a supplement for certain conditions: adrenal insufficiency, some cases of depression and lupus, and to improve sexual function and bone density in older adults. It’s sometimes tried for menopausal symptoms, low libido and to support muscle mass, but evidence is mixed and potential side effects mean it should be used only with medical supervision.

High DHEA in females can cause androgen excess: acne, oily skin, hirsutism (excess facial/body hair), male-pattern hair loss, irregular or absent periods and reduced fertility. Severe elevation may deepen the voice, enlarge the clitoris, and suggest adrenal disorders (adrenal hyperplasia or tumor). It’s also linked to mood changes, weight gain, and insulin resistance; medical evaluation and hormone testing are advised.

To raise DHEA naturally, do regular strength training and high‑intensity interval exercise, get adequate sleep, and reduce chronic stress with relaxation or mindfulness. Maintain a healthy weight, eat a balanced diet rich in healthy fats, vitamin D, zinc and magnesium, and limit alcohol and smoking. Discuss symptoms and any supplements with your doctor before starting, especially if you have hormonal or medical conditions.

DHEA is sometimes used off-label for women with diminished ovarian reserve or poor ovarian response; small studies suggest it may improve egg quantity, quality and IVF outcomes for some, but evidence is mixed and not definitive. It can cause androgenic side effects and interact with medications. Use only under a fertility specialist’s supervision with proper dosing and monitoring.

DHEA is an adrenal hormone precursor; some women with adrenal insufficiency, low libido or age-related declines may see modest benefits, but evidence is limited and mixed. It can cause side effects (acne, unwanted hair growth, voice deepening), affect hormone-sensitive conditions, and interact with medications. Not routinely recommended without medical supervision—check hormone levels and consult a clinician before use, especially in pregnancy or breast cancer risk.

Typical DHEA regimens for women with diminished ovarian reserve are 25 mg three times daily (75 mg/day) or 25 mg twice daily (50 mg/day), often started 8–12 weeks before assisted reproduction. DHEA can cause androgenic side effects and interacts with some medications; it’s contraindicated in hormone-sensitive cancers and adrenal disorders. Always discuss dosing, monitoring and safety with a fertility specialist or endocrinologist before use.
