Cytomegalovirus IgG Antibody

CMV IgG positive means you were exposed to cytomegalovirus previously and have developed IgG antibodies. These antibodies typically persist for life and indicate past infection or immunity, not necessarily active illness. In pregnancy it lowers the likelihood of a new primary infection, though reactivation or reinfection can occur; further testing (IgM, avidity, PCR) may be done if recent infection is suspected.

A positive IgG antibody test means your immune system has produced IgG antibodies against a specific pathogen, indicating prior infection or vaccination. It typically reflects exposure weeks earlier, not an active infection. IgG often suggests some level of protection, but it doesn’t guarantee complete or long-lasting immunity, and antibody levels may wane over time.

Being CMV positive means you've been infected with cytomegalovirus. Most healthy people have no symptoms or only mild flu-like illness and need no treatment. For newborns (congenital CMV) or people with weakened immunity, it can cause serious issues—hearing loss, developmental delays, organ disease. Tests (IgM/IgG, PCR) distinguish recent from past infection; antivirals and monitoring are used when needed.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common herpesvirus that can infect pregnant women and cross the placenta. Primary maternal infection poses the highest risk to the fetus, potentially causing congenital CMV with hearing loss, developmental delays, growth restriction, miscarriage or stillbirth. Diagnosis uses maternal serology and fetal testing. Prevention focuses on hand hygiene and avoiding contact with young children’s saliva and urine; treatment options are limited.

CMV IgG indicates past infection or immunity and itself is not treatable. A positive IgG alone usually needs no therapy. Active CMV disease (diagnosed by symptoms, IgM, PCR or tissue testing) can be treated with antivirals such as ganciclovir/valganciclovir in newborns and immunocompromised patients; pregnant people require specialist assessment and further testing.

Kissing can transmit cytomegalovirus (CMV) because it spreads in saliva. Most healthy adults have mild or no symptoms, but pregnant people and immunocompromised individuals risk serious or fetal infection. To reduce risk, avoid kissing infants/young children or anyone with known active CMV if pregnant, don’t share utensils, practice strict hand hygiene, and seek testing or obstetric advice if exposed.
