Cytology -PAP, in Navi Mumbai

A cytology test examines cells under a microscope to detect abnormal, precancerous, or cancerous changes. Cervical cytology (Pap test) screens for cervical cancer and HPV‑related changes. Cytology from body fluids or fine‑needle samples can help diagnose infections, inflammation, or malignancy and guide further testing (HPV testing or biopsy) and treatment decisions.

Cytology is the branch of biology and medicine that studies cells, their structure, function, chemistry, organelles, life cycle, and division. It includes examination of cell morphology and behavior in health and disease, often for diagnostic purposes (for example Pap smears and fine-needle aspirates). Cytology informs developmental biology, oncology, pathology, and research into cellular processes and responses to treatments.

Cytology examines individual cells collected noninvasively or by fine‑needle aspiration (e.g., Pap smear), is quicker but may miss tissue architecture. A biopsy removes a piece of tissue (core, excisional, or incisional), preserving architecture for more definitive diagnosis and staging; it’s more invasive and may require local anesthesia and longer processing. Choice depends on suspected disease, needed detail, and clinical context.

Yes. Cytology can miss cancer because it samples cells, not whole tissue. False negatives occur from sampling error (missed or scant abnormal cells), tumor location, early-stage or well-differentiated tumors, poor specimen quality, and interpretation errors. If clinical suspicion remains despite a negative cytology, repeat tests, adjunct testing (e.g., HPV or imaging), or a biopsy may be recommended for definitive diagnosis.

A normal cytology result (often reported as "negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy" or NILM) means no abnormal or pre-cancerous cells were seen in the sample. It indicates the tissue sampled appears healthy, though mild benign changes such as inflammation or infection may be noted. Routine screening is usually recommended at regular intervals; follow-up depends on local screening guidelines.

A cytology test’s cost varies widely by country and setting. Self-pay prices commonly range from about $20–$200 in the United States, while in countries with public screening programs it’s often free. In India typical private-lab fees are roughly ₹300–₹800. Clinic type, laboratory charges, and added HPV testing or pathology can increase the final bill; insurance often covers part or all.
