Culturue Aerobic Bacteria Sensitivity

An aerobic bacterial culture and sensitivity test isolates and grows bacteria from a clinical specimen in oxygen-rich conditions to identify the organism and determine which antibiotics inhibit it. Cultures are plated, colonies identified, then susceptibility testing (disk diffusion or dilution) classifies drugs as susceptible, intermediate, or resistant. Results, usually available in 24–72 hours, guide targeted antibiotic therapy.

Normal aerobic culture results depend on the specimen: truly sterile sites (blood, cerebrospinal fluid) should show no growth. For urine, <10^3 colony-forming units (CFU)/mL is usually insignificant; ≥10^5 CFU/mL is classically diagnostic (lower thresholds such as ≥10^3 CFU/mL may be used for symptomatic patients). Sensitivity testing is done when clinically significant growth is found.

Clinicians use these results to choose effective targeted antimicrobial therapy, adjust treatment when resistance is present, and monitor local resistance patterns.
