Culture Stool (Aerobic), in Navi Mumbai

An aerobic stool culture test is a laboratory exam that cultivates and identifies aerobic bacterial pathogens in feces. It detects organisms such as Salmonella, Shigella and pathogenic E. coli, and determines species and antibiotic sensitivities to guide treatment. Used to investigate acute diarrhoea, dysentery or suspected food‑borne infection, a fresh stool sample is plated on selective media; results usually take 24–72 hours.

A positive aerobic culture means aerobic bacteria grew from a clinical specimen under oxygen-rich conditions. It indicates bacterial presence that may cause infection, but must be interpreted with clinical context and specimen type since it can reflect colonization or contamination. The lab typically identifies the organism, reports growth level (scant/moderate/heavy), and provides antibiotic susceptibility to guide treatment.

A positive stool culture means a disease-causing organism (bacteria, parasite, or rarely fungus) was grown. The lab identifies the pathogen and antibiotic sensitivities so your clinician can give targeted treatment or antiparasitic drugs. You’ll be advised on hydration, diet, hygiene, and when to isolate to prevent spread. Severe infections may need hospitalization and IV fluids; some results are reportable to public health.

An aerobic culture test grows and identifies bacteria that need oxygen from a patient specimen (e.g., throat, wound, urine, sputum or blood) to diagnose infection. The sample is plated on nutrient media and incubated in oxygen-rich conditions; resulting colonies are identified and undergo antibiotic susceptibility testing to guide treatment decisions. Results usually take 24 to 72 hours.

Aerobic culture grows microorganisms that require oxygen: samples are placed on suitable media and incubated in oxygenated conditions to identify and test bacteria that thrive with oxygen. Anaerobic culture grows organisms that cannot tolerate or grow well in oxygen: samples are processed with oxygen‑free techniques, special media and sealed containers to recover and identify anaerobes, often needing longer incubation and careful handling.

Yes — stool culture can detect many bacterial causes of gastrointestinal infection (Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, some E. coli) and can provide antibiotic susceptibility. It does not reliably detect viral pathogens or some parasites; these require antigen, PCR, or ova-and-parasite testing. Sensitivity varies, and results typically take 48–72 hours. Negative culture doesn’t always rule out infection.
