Culture Stool (Aerobic)

An aerobic stool culture test is a laboratory exam that cultivates and identifies aerobic bacterial pathogens in feces. It detects organisms such as Salmonella, Shigella and pathogenic E. coli, and determines species and antibiotic sensitivities to guide treatment. Used to investigate acute diarrhoea, dysentery or suspected food‑borne infection, a fresh stool sample is plated on selective media; results usually take 24–72 hours.

A positive aerobic culture means aerobic bacteria grew from a clinical specimen under oxygen-rich conditions. It indicates bacterial presence that may cause infection, but must be interpreted with clinical context and specimen type since it can reflect colonization or contamination. The lab typically identifies the organism, reports growth level (scant/moderate/heavy), and provides antibiotic susceptibility to guide treatment.
