A fungal culture and sensitivity test identifies the fungus causing an infection and determines which antifungal drugs will effectively inhibit or kill it. A laboratory grows a collected sample (skin, nails, sputum, urine, or tissue), identifies the species, and performs susceptibility testing to guide targeted therapy. Results may take days to weeks but help choose the most effective antifungal and reduce treatment failure.

Antifungal sensitivity is how susceptible a fungus is to an antifungal drug, usually measured in the laboratory by culture and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). A sensitive result means the drug inhibits fungal growth at concentrations achievable in the body; resistance means reduced or absent response. Testing guides selection, dose and duration of antifungal therapy, especially in invasive, persistent, or recurrent infections.

Several fungi show antifungal resistance: Candida auris (often multidrug‑resistant) and Candida glabrata (azole and rising echinocandin resistance); Aspergillus fumigatus with azole resistance; Mucorales (Mucor, Rhizopus) less susceptible to many azoles; Fusarium and Scedosporium species (broad resistance); terbinafine‑resistant dermatophytes like Trichophyton indotineae; and occasional fluconazole‑resistant Cryptococcus. Resistance patterns vary by region and prior treatment, so laboratory testing guides therapy.
