Culture CSF (Aerobic)

A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture test grows microbes from a lumbar puncture sample to identify bacteria or fungi causing central nervous system infections. It’s ordered for suspected meningitis, encephalitis or shunt infections. Positive growth confirms infection and guides antibiotic or antifungal choice; no growth doesn’t fully exclude infection (viruses need molecular tests). Results typically take 48–72 hours, longer for slow-growing organisms.

Aerobic culture positive means organisms that grow in the presence of oxygen were isolated from a clinical specimen. It indicates aerobic bacteria were recovered and identified, usually with antibiotic susceptibility testing to guide treatment. This result does not detect anaerobic organisms and must be interpreted alongside symptoms and other tests to distinguish true infection from colonization or contamination.

A positive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) test means abnormal cells, infection, inflammation, bleeding, or cancerous cells may be present. Immediate steps usually include hospital admission, targeted antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory treatment, further tests (culture, PCR, cytology, imaging), repeat lumbar puncture if needed, and specialist referral (neurology/infectious disease).
