The BACTEC system continuously monitors culture bottles for microbial growth (usually by detecting CO2 production), enabling faster detection and reporting of bloodstream infections than manual incubation.

BD BACTEC systems are sold through distributors; instruments typically cost several thousand to tens of thousands of US dollars depending on model and configuration. Single-use BD BACTEC blood-culture bottles generally range from about $2–$10 each, with prices varying by bottle type, bundle size, region, and supplier contract. Installation, service contracts and accessories add to overall program cost.

A BACTEC blood culture usually detects most bloodstream bacteria within 24–48 hours, with many positives by 72 hours; labs generally incubate bottles for about 5 days (some extend to 7) before reporting negatives. For mycobacterial testing with BACTEC MGIT, growth takes much longer—commonly several weeks, often up to 6–8 weeks for tuberculosis cultures.

A positive blood culture means microorganisms (bacteria or fungi) were grown from a blood sample, indicating a bloodstream infection (bacteremia or fungemia). It may reflect true infection or contamination; clinicians interpret results alongside symptoms, repeat cultures, and other tests. Blood culture collection is generally safe but carries minor risks: pain, bruising, hematoma, local infection, fainting or dizziness, and rare nerve or arterial injury. Improper technique can contaminate samples, causing false‑positive results, and blood loss may be significant in very ill or anticoagulated patients. Allergic reactions to antiseptics or adhesive dressings are uncommon.
