An eye culture test collects a small sample of tears, discharge, or a swab from the conjunctiva or cornea to grow and identify bacteria, fungi, or viruses causing infection. It determines the specific pathogen and antibiotic sensitivity so clinicians can target treatment. Samples are taken in clinic with sterile swabs; results usually take 24–72 hours, longer for fungal cultures.

Eye swab tests collect conjunctival or corneal samples to detect pathogens and guide treatment. They identify bacteria (e.g., Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas), viruses (adenovirus, herpes), fungi, and Chlamydia. Laboratory methods include microscopy, culture, PCR and sensitivity testing to determine the organism and its antibiotic susceptibility; they can also detect inflammatory cells and help diagnose conjunctivitis, keratitis, or ulceration.

A culture (aerobic) or swab test report is a laboratory result from a specimen taken with a swab that identifies bacteria or fungi that grow in oxygenated conditions. The report lists organism names, colony counts and whether growth is present, and usually includes antibiotic susceptibility (an antibiogram) to guide treatment. Results help confirm infection and choose effective antibiotics.

An eye culture is done by cleaning the eyelids, instilling topical anesthetic, and using a sterile swab or loop to sample pus, the conjunctival surface, or the edge of a corneal ulcer without touching lashes. The specimen is placed into appropriate transport media and sent to the lab for Gram stain, culture and sensitivity (and viral or fungal testing if indicated). Aseptic technique and patient comfort are maintained.

Eye swab results depend on the test. Routine bacterial cultures often yield preliminary findings within 24 hours and definitive identification with antibiotic sensitivity in 48–72 hours. Viral PCR tests may return results in 24–48 hours. Some specialized or slow-growing organisms can take longer. Urgent or inpatient samples are often expedited, so turnaround varies by test type and laboratory workflow.

A positive culture test means that microorganisms—such as bacteria or fungi—grew from a clinical specimen in the laboratory, indicating the presence of organisms at the sampled site.
