A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture test is a laboratory examination of fluid obtained by lumbar puncture to detect and grow bacteria or fungi causing central nervous system infections such as meningitis. The fluid is incubated on culture media and monitored for organism growth and antibiotic sensitivity. Results typically take 24–72 hours or longer and help confirm diagnosis and guide treatment.

An aerobic culture test detects and identifies aerobic (oxygen‑requiring) bacteria in clinical specimens such as urine, wound swabs, sputum, throat or blood. It determines which bacteria are present, measures growth, and helps guide antibiotic selection through susceptibility testing. Clinicians use it to diagnose bacterial infections, monitor treatment effectiveness, and confirm eradication of pathogens.

Costs vary widely by country and provider. In India private labs typically charge around ₹300–2,500. In the United States outpatient lab prices commonly range $50–$300 (hospital fees may be higher). In the UK CSF culture is generally covered by the NHS; private tests may cost about £30–£150. Exact price depends on location, lab, and additional hospital or processing fees.

A positive CSF test means abnormal findings in cerebrospinal fluid—commonly infection (bacterial, viral, fungal), inflammation (e.g., autoimmune), cancer cells, or abnormal biomarkers. Clinicians will interpret results, order further tests, start targeted treatment (antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, steroids, or oncologic therapy), and monitor closely; hospitalization or specialist referral is often required. Follow-up depends on the specific diagnosis and patient condition.

A lumbar puncture (CSF test) is generally safe. Common, usually mild risks include headache, local back soreness and bruising. Serious complications are uncommon but can include bleeding, infection, nerve injury or — in people with very high intracranial pressure — brain herniation. Doctors screen for risk factors, use sterile technique, and most patients recover quickly without lasting problems.

Preliminary CSF findings (cell count, Gram stain) arrive within hours. Bacterial cultures typically grow in 24–48 hours and are usually reported by 48–72 hours; susceptibility testing can add about 24 hours. Fungal cultures may take several days, while mycobacterial cultures can require weeks (often up to 6–8 weeks). Final identification and sensitivities depend on the specific organism.
