CT Scan Whole Abdomen

A full abdominal CT visualizes the liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, adrenal glands, gallbladder, biliary tree, stomach, intestines, mesentery, peritoneum, pelvic organs and major vessels (aorta, IVC). It detects tumors, cysts, stones, inflammation, infection, abscess, bowel obstruction, bleeding, trauma and vascular abnormalities (aneurysms). Contrast improves evaluation of organ injury, masses and blood flow.

A CT scan with iodine contrast is a computed tomography exam where an iodine-based contrast agent is injected (or given orally/rectally) to enhance X-ray images. The iodine highlights blood vessels and improves differentiation of organs, tumors, infections, and vascular problems. It helps clinicians detect abnormalities more clearly. Possible risks include allergic reactions and kidney strain, so renal function and allergy history are checked beforehand.

A CT (computed tomography) scan for a toddler is a quick X‑ray exam that produces detailed cross‑sectional images of the head, chest, abdomen or bones to diagnose injuries, infections, bleeding or congenital problems. Toddlers may need mild sedation to stay still; staff use pediatric dose protocols and shielding to minimize radiation. The scan is ordered only when benefits outweigh risks.

Fasting may be required for a whole-abdomen CT depending on contrast use. For CT with IV and/or oral contrast, centers commonly ask for 4–6 hours fasting from solid food (clear fluids often allowed) to reduce nausea and improve imaging; non-contrast scans may not need fasting. Continue essential medications with small sips of water unless told otherwise. Follow your imaging center’s specific instructions.

Abdominal CT can detect primary and metastatic malignancies including liver cancers (hepatocellular carcinoma and metastases), pancreatic cancer, renal cell carcinoma, adrenal tumours, splenic lesions, stomach and bowel cancers (gastric, colorectal), ovarian masses, retroperitoneal sarcomas, enlarged malignant lymph nodes and peritoneal carcinomatosis from various primaries. It helps characterize size, spread, vascular involvement and guide biopsy or treatment planning.

A whole-abdomen CT appointment typically lasts 15–30 minutes. The actual image acquisition is very fast — often under a minute to a few minutes — but preparation (positioning, IV contrast insertion) and post-scan checks can extend the visit. If oral or delayed contrast is required, or if monitoring for reactions is needed, allow up to 45–60 minutes.
