What is a CT Scan Urography Test in Kolkata ?
What is CT Scan Urography?
CT Scan Urography is a specialized CT scan that images the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. It uses X-rays and often an injected contrast dye. The test shows both anatomy and how urine moves through the urinary tract. It is particularly important for people with diabetes or hypertension , the two leading causes of chronic kidney disease in India, responsible for over 60% of cases requiring dialysis.
What does CT Scan Urography measure?
It is important because it helps find stones, tumors, blockages, infections, and injury. It can also show bleeding sources and structural problems. Doctors use CT urography to investigate unexplained blood in the urine, persistent flank pain, recurrent infections, or suspected cancer. eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) is calculated from the creatinine value, age, and gender. It is a more informative indicator of kidney health than creatinine alone.
What symptoms suggest CT Scan Urography may be needed?
A doctor may order CT Scan Urography when a patient reports ankle or leg swelling, reduced urine output, frothy or foamy urine, persistent fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, persistent itching, muscle cramps, and high blood pressure. In Kolkata, residents of Kalighat and Alipore commonly present for this test after noticing these symptoms during a routine or preventive consultation.
How is CT Scan Urography performed?
A certified phlebotomist cleans the inner elbow, locates a vein, inserts a fine sterile needle, and draws the required blood (typically 5 to 10 mL). The procedure takes 3 to 5 minutes. You feel a brief pinch at insertion and mild pressure during collection. You can eat, drink, drive, and resume all activities immediately afterwards.
How accurate is CT Scan Urography?
Rare causes of inaccurate results include: very high biotin supplementation (interferes with immunoassays), haemolysed samples from difficult venipuncture, or failure to fast when fasting was required. Following preparation instructions and using a trained phlebotomist minimises these risks.
Are there any risks to CT Scan Urography?
This is a low-risk procedure. The only intervention is the blood draw. Side effects are limited to a brief pinch and an occasional small bruise at the puncture site, which resolves in 24 to 48 hours without treatment. Patients on anticoagulants should hold light pressure for 3 to 5 minutes after the draw.
CT Scan Urography Test Preparation in Kolkata
Fasting and dietary instructions:
Fast for 8 to 12 hours before the test. Water is allowed and encouraged , drink 2 to 3 glasses before leaving home. Avoid tea, coffee, juice, food, alcohol, and supplements during the fasting window.
Medication guidance:
If you take NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac) or ACE inhibitors, inform your doctor. These can transiently elevate creatinine and your doctor may advise a brief pause if clinically safe.
What to bring:
Carry your doctor's test order, a government-issued photo ID, and your OPD insurance card. If you have had this test before, bring previous reports , your doctor can compare results over time.
Timing:
Morning slots are recommended for most blood tests. Most markers are most stable before meals and activity. GetVisit home collection in Kolkata is available from 6:00 AM, including in Salt Lake and Dum Dum.

Why Take a CT Scan Urography Test in Kolkata ?
When does a doctor order CT Scan Urography?
Your doctor may order CT Scan Urography based on symptoms you reported, abnormal findings on examination, or as part of a structured annual health check. The specific indication depends on your age, gender, medical history, and current symptoms.
Who should get CT Scan Urography done in Kolkata?
Kolkata's high diabetes and hypertension burden translates into elevated chronic kidney disease risk. Monsoon waterborne infections can also trigger acute kidney injury. Residents of Howrah and Behala, where water quality varies seasonally, face additional renal risk during the monsoon. CT Scan Urography is part of urological imaging used when patients have blood in the urine, flank pain, recurrent infections, or suspected blockage. Doctors order it to look for stones, tumors, strictures, or trauma and to plan treatment. Those who benefit most from regular CT Scan Urography testing include adults above 40, people with sedentary lifestyles or BMI above 25, those managing chronic conditions, smokers, and anyone whose previous result was borderline. Early detection through regular testing in Kolkata is consistently more cost-effective than treating advanced disease.
What conditions can CT Scan Urography help diagnose?
The conditions diagnosable through CT Scan Urography depend on the specific markers the test measures. Results either confirm a suspected diagnosis, support a clinical suspicion requiring further investigation, or effectively exclude the condition the test was screening for.
What do CT Scan Urography results mean?
A single elevated creatinine is not always pathological , dehydration or strenuous exercise can temporarily raise it. Your nephrologist will repeat the test in 4 to 12 weeks to confirm whether the finding is persistent. Microalbuminuria (albumin 30–300 mg/day in urine) is the earliest sign of diabetic kidney disease , appearing before creatinine rises.
How often should CT Scan Urography be repeated?
For preventive screening with a normal baseline: annually for most adults above 35. For monitoring a known condition: at the interval your specialist recommends , typically every 3 to 6 months for active conditions and annually for stable, well-controlled ones.
What happens after CT Scan Urography results are ready?
Once your results appear in your GetVisit profile, discuss them with your doctor or a GetVisit-verified specialist. Your doctor will interpret each value in the context of your full health history, current medications, and symptoms , and advise on the next step: lifestyle change, repeat testing, medication adjustment, or specialist referral. All GetVisit reports are stored permanently and can be shared with any doctor instantly.
