CT Scan Urography

CT urography is generally not painful. The scan itself is painless, though lying still and breath‑holding can be uncomfortable. Most discomfort comes from IV contrast — brief warmth, flushing, or a metallic taste — and from needle insertion. If a urinary catheter is needed, insertion may cause temporary discomfort. Serious contrast reactions are rare; discuss allergies and kidney function with your provider beforehand.

Costs vary widely by country, facility and insurance. In the US CT urography typically ranges roughly $300–$3,000 out of pocket; in private UK settings about £200–£600 (NHS provides it free to eligible patients); in India approximately ₹2,500–₹8,000. A CT urogram is a specialized CT using timed IV contrast phases (non‑contrast, nephrographic and excretory) to optimally image kidneys, ureters and bladder for stones, hematuria or urothelial tumors. A “normal” CT is a general cross‑sectional scan that may be non‑contrast or single‑phase contrast and is not tailored to visualize the collecting system, so it can miss subtle urinary tract lesions.

CT urography is generally safe for people with normal kidney function, but it uses iodinated contrast that can rarely cause kidney injury—especially in those with pre-existing renal impairment, diabetes, dehydration, or multiple risk factors. Safety steps include checking eGFR, adequate hydration, using low‑osmolar contrast and minimizing dose. If kidney function is poor, alternatives (ultrasound or MRI without contrast) or a clinician discussion are recommended.

A CT urography scan itself usually takes about 10–30 minutes. With IV contrast administration, patient preparation and any delayed (excretory-phase) images, the total appointment typically runs 30–60 minutes, and occasionally up to 90 minutes if extra imaging or clinical assessment is required. You should arrive 10–15 minutes early for registration, consent and possible kidney-function testing.

After a CT urography you'll be observed briefly for allergic reactions, then usually allowed to go home. Drink plenty of fluids to help clear the contrast; monitor the injection site for bruising. Mild effects (nausea, warmth) are common; report breathing difficulty, rash, or severe pain immediately. The radiologist reviews images and sends a report to your referring doctor, who discusses results and any follow-up.
