A triple-phase CT abdomen is a multiphase CT with sequential scans after intravenous contrast: non-contrast, arterial-phase (early post-contrast) and portal-venous or delayed phases. It characterizes liver lesions, vascular anatomy, tumors, infection and trauma by showing enhancement patterns over time. The scan requires IV contrast, timed breath-holds, and carries small risks from radiation and contrast-related kidney or allergic effects.

The three CT scan phases are: 1) Non-contrast (pre-contrast) — baseline imaging to detect calcification, hemorrhage or fat. 2) Arterial phase (about 20 to 40 seconds after contrast) — visualizes arteries and hypervascular lesions. 3) Venous/portal venous phase (about 60 to 70 seconds) — optimal for parenchymal organs, liver lesions and metastases.

To prepare for a triple‑phase CT: fast for 4–6 hours, stay well hydrated, and wear loose clothing without metal.
