A CT scan of the thorax evaluates the lungs, airways, pleura, heart, great vessels and mediastinal structures. It detects lung cancer, infections (pneumonia, tuberculosis), pulmonary embolism, interstitial lung disease, pleural effusion or thickening, and traumatic injuries. It also assesses lymph nodes, vascular abnormalities, and helps stage or monitor known thoracic disease and guide biopsies or treatment planning.

Cost of a thoracic CT scan varies by country and setting. In India private centres it’s roughly ₹2,000–₹8,000 for non‑contrast, higher with contrast. In the US outpatient charges commonly range $300–$2,000 depending on facility and contrast use. In the UK it’s free on the NHS for eligible patients; private fees are typically £150–£800. A thorax (chest) CT often includes the lower neck and can partially show the thyroid, particularly its size, large nodules, calcifications, or retrosternal extension. However, it’s not optimized for detailed thyroid evaluation—neck ultrasound or a dedicated neck CT/MRI is better for small nodules and characterization. Note: iodinated contrast used in CT can affect subsequent radioactive iodine treatments.

A CT thorax usually takes about 10–30 minutes overall. The actual image acquisition is very fast—often under a minute to a few minutes—while positioning, paperwork and any IV placement for contrast add most of the time. If contrast is required, allow extra time (commonly 20–40 minutes total) for injection and brief monitoring for reactions.

A CT scan of the thorax is generally safe but can cause: exposure to ionising radiation with a small long‑term cancer risk; reactions to iodinated contrast (hives, nausea, rare severe allergy); contrast‑related kidney injury in susceptible people; temporary flushing, warmth or metallic taste during injection; bruising/infection at the IV site; and anxiety or claustrophobia. Pregnant people should avoid CT unless essential.

If a CT shows a serious or life‑threatening issue, radiologists prioritize a STAT read and notify the ordering clinician immediately — often by phone or urgent electronic alert. Preliminary results can be available within minutes to an hour, with a finalized written report usually within a few hours. Exact timing varies by facility and clinical setting.
