CT Scan Thorax Contrast

A CT scan of the thorax with contrast is an X‑ray–based imaging test that injects iodinated dye into a vein to highlight blood vessels and tissues. It creates detailed cross‑sectional images of the lungs, heart, mediastinum and chest wall to detect tumors, infections, pulmonary embolism or vascular abnormalities. It’s quick; risks include ionizing radiation, contrast allergy and effects on kidney function.

A doctor orders a thorax CT scan to get detailed images of the lungs, heart, blood vessels and chest structures. Common reasons include suspected pulmonary embolism, pneumonia or other infections, lung cancer or nodules, chronic lung disease (COPD, interstitial lung disease), trauma, unexplained chest pain or hemoptysis, preoperative assessment, and to guide biopsies or monitor treatment response.

Before a contrast CT thorax: arrange recent kidney tests (serum creatinine/eGFR) if at risk; drink plenty of fluids unless told otherwise; fast 4–6 hours if advised. Tell staff about allergies (especially prior contrast reactions), pregnancy, and all medications—stop metformin at the time of scan and for 48 hours afterwards until renal function is checked. Remove metal jewelry, bring ID/prior imaging; premedication may be given if needed.

A CT thorax without contrast is a computed tomography scan of the chest performed without intravenous dye. It creates detailed cross‑sectional images to evaluate lungs, airways and chest wall, useful for detecting nodules, pneumonia, emphysema, interstitial lung disease and following known lesions. It’s quick and avoids contrast risks but is less accurate for assessing blood vessels or mediastinal enhancement (e.g., pulmonary embolism).

A CT thorax scan itself typically takes only a few seconds to a few minutes for image acquisition. Including registration, positioning and IV contrast setup (if used), expect about 15–30 minutes at the imaging center; with additional observation or delays, appointments can run up to 45–60 minutes. Non-contrast scans are usually quicker than contrast-enhanced studies.

You can usually resume your normal diet immediately after a CT scan with iodinated contrast. Drink plenty of water for the next 24 hours to help flush the contrast. If you feel nauseous, choose bland, light foods (toast, bananas, clear broth). If you have kidney disease or take metformin, follow your clinician’s instructions—special precautions or a brief medication hold may be needed.
