A dorsal spine CT scan is a computed tomography study of the thoracic (dorsal) vertebrae that produces detailed cross-sectional images of bones, discs, spinal canal, and soft tissues. It is used to detect fractures, degenerative changes, infection, tumors, congenital anomalies, and assess alignment or post-operative status. The noninvasive exam uses X-rays and computer reconstruction, may involve contrast, and involves ionizing radiation.

A CT scan of the spine with contrast is a specialised computed tomography exam where iodine-based dye is injected to highlight blood vessels, soft tissues, and abnormal enhancement in vertebrae, discs, spinal canal and surrounding structures. It improves detection of tumors, infection, inflammation, fractures and vascular lesions. The procedure is quick; risks include allergic reaction and kidney effects, so kidney function and pregnancy are checked beforehand.

Contrast is usually not required for CT of the cervical spine when evaluating bone injury or fractures — a non-contrast CT provides superior bony detail. Contrast-enhanced CT (or CT angiography) is used when assessing infection, tumor, soft-tissue or epidural involvement, or suspected vascular injury. The need for contrast depends on the clinical question and is decided by the referring clinician or radiologist.

A CT scan of the dorso‑lumbar spine is a cross‑sectional X‑ray study of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. It produces detailed images of bone and the spinal canal to detect fractures, degeneration, alignment problems, tumors, infections, and bony causes of nerve compression. CT is fast and excellent for bone detail but involves ionizing radiation and gives less soft‑tissue detail than MRI.

The dorsal spine refers to the back portion of the vertebral column, commonly the thoracic (mid‑back) region. It comprises 12 thoracic vertebrae (T1–T12), connects to the ribs, protects the spinal cord, and provides stability and posture. Compared with cervical and lumbar regions it is less mobile but well‑supported for load bearing and rib attachment. Pain may signal strain, degeneration, or nerve involvement.

A CT scan can show bone-related causes of spinal nerve compression (fractures, bone spurs, narrowed foramina) and, with myelography, outline nerve root impingement. However, it cannot directly image nerve tissue or functional nerve damage as well as MRI, which is preferred for soft tissues, discs and the spinal cord. Electrophysiological tests (EMG/NCS) assess nerve function.
