CT Scan Spine Cervical Contrast

A CT scan of the cervical spine with contrast is a detailed X‑ray imaging test of the neck vertebrae performed after injection of iodinated contrast dye. The contrast highlights blood vessels, inflamed tissue, tumors and areas of infection or abnormal enhancement, improving visualization of soft tissues, nerve roots and fractures. It’s commonly used for trauma, suspected masses, infection or unexplained neurologic symptoms, guiding diagnosis and treatment.

Contrast is usually not needed for a CT of the cervical spine: non‑contrast CT is standard for assessing bone, alignment, and acute trauma. Contrast-enhanced CT or CT angiography is used when evaluating soft‑tissue masses, infection/abscess, suspected neoplasm, vascular injury/dissection, or specific postoperative concerns. MRI is preferred for spinal cord and soft‑tissue detail.

Costs vary widely. In India a CT cervical spine typically costs about ₹1,000–₹6,000. In the UK it’s free on the NHS; private scans run roughly £150–£500. In the United States out‑of‑pocket prices range approximately $300–$3,000 (often $1,000–$1,500 in many centers). Final price depends on location, facility, contrast use, and emergency vs elective booking.

MRI is the best overall scan for the cervical spine when evaluating discs, spinal cord, nerve roots, and soft-tissue pathology. CT is preferred in acute trauma to detect bone fractures and for surgical planning. Plain X‑rays are useful for initial alignment and instability screening. Choice depends on the clinical situation: MRI for neurological symptoms, CT for suspected fracture, X‑ray for quick assessment.

A cervical spine CT’s image acquisition is very quick—often under a minute to a few minutes. With registration, positioning and instructions, expect the entire exam to take about 10–20 minutes. In emergency settings it may be done even faster. If contrast is required or additional imaging is obtained, total appointment time can extend to 30–45 minutes.

Red flags in a cervical spine assessment include focal neurological deficits (weakness, numbness, altered reflexes), signs of spinal cord compression (gait disturbance, new bladder or bowel dysfunction), significant trauma or high‑risk mechanism, midline cervical tenderness, age >65, fever or systemic infection signs, history of cancer or unexplained weight loss, and severe unremitting or night pain requiring urgent investigation.
