CT Scan Sialogram

A CT sialogram is a specialized imaging test of the salivary glands and ducts where a small catheter injects contrast into the duct and a CT scan captures detailed images. It identifies stones, strictures, inflammation, fistulas or tumors and helps plan treatment. It can cause mild discomfort, allergic reaction to contrast, infection risk and exposes you to ionizing radiation.

A sialogram is an X‑ray study of the salivary gland ducts and glands performed after injecting contrast into a duct. It evaluates ductal anatomy and function and detects blockages (salivary stones), strictures, infections, chronic inflammatory conditions (eg, Sjögren’s), recurrent swelling, fistulas or tumors. It helps plan treatment by localizing obstructions and assessing gland damage.

A sialogram may cause brief discomfort when the salivary duct is cannulated and contrast injected — patients commonly report pressure, stinging or a salty taste. Discomfort is usually mild to moderate, short-lived, and controllable with local anaesthetic or gentle technique. Temporary swelling or tenderness can occur; serious complications (infection, allergic reaction, duct injury) are rare. Most people tolerate the procedure well.

A sialogram is performed by checking consent and contrast allergy, positioning the patient, cleaning and anesthetizing the duct orifice, cannulating the salivary duct with a fine cannula or probe, and gently injecting water‑soluble contrast under fluoroscopy or serial radiographs. Obtain multiple views, monitor for pain or extravasation, remove the cannula, and advise warm compresses, sialogogues and infection/contrast reaction precautions.

Yes. Sialography carries small risks: allergic reaction to iodinated contrast (rarely severe), local pain, swelling, bleeding or infection of the duct, ductal injury or perforation, and contrast extravasation with soft‑tissue swelling. Radiation dose is low and severe complications are uncommon. Tell your clinician about iodine allergies, pregnancy and medications beforehand, and follow post‑procedure care instructions.

Yes. CT scans can detect salivary gland infections (sialadenitis) by showing gland enlargement, surrounding inflammation, abscess formation, ductal dilation, or obstructing stones. Contrast-enhanced CT is particularly useful for identifying abscesses and deep-space extension or complications. Ultrasound is often the first-line test for superficial glands, but CT is preferred when deeper tissue involvement or complex anatomy needs clearer evaluation.
