CT SCAN PULMONARY VENOGRAPHY

CT venography is a contrast-enhanced CT scan that maps the veins to detect blood clots and assess venous anatomy. It’s commonly used to diagnose deep vein thrombosis and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, evaluate venous obstruction, varicose or malformed veins, and plan or follow-up interventions. The test shows clot location, extent of blockage, and helps guide treatment decisions and procedural planning.

A pulmonary venogram is an imaging test that visualizes the pulmonary veins by injecting contrast dye and taking X‑ray/fluoroscopic or CT images. It maps vein anatomy and detects blood clots, narrowing (stenosis), or abnormal connections. Clinically it’s used to evaluate suspected venous disease in the lungs and to plan or assess procedures such as pulmonary vein isolation for atrial fibrillation.

CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) is a contrast-enhanced CT scan done mainly to detect or exclude pulmonary embolism by directly visualizing clots in the pulmonary arteries and defining their size and location to guide treatment. It is used for sudden unexplained shortness of breath, chest pain, low oxygen levels or coughing up blood, and can also assess other vascular or lung causes of symptoms.

Yes. CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) is the preferred imaging test to detect pulmonary embolism: it uses intravenous contrast to visualize filling defects (clots) in the pulmonary arteries with high sensitivity and specificity. It’s quick and widely available, but contrast may be unsuitable for renal impairment or allergy; in those cases a V/Q scan or ultrasound may be considered alongside clinical assessment and D-dimer testing.

A CT venography scan itself is rapid—image acquisition usually takes 5–10 minutes. With preparation (registration, IV placement, contrast injection), positioning, waiting-room time and post-scan checks, the full appointment typically lasts about 30–60 minutes. If contrast is used, you may be observed briefly for reactions. Exact timing can vary by center, individual circumstances and technical factors.

Recovery after a CT venogram is usually quick and uneventful. Most people go home the same day and can resume normal activities soon. You may feel warmth or a metallic taste when contrast is injected and have mild soreness or bruising at the IV site. Drink plenty of fluids to help clear contrast. Seek medical help for worsening pain, swelling, rash, breathing difficulty or reduced urine output.
