CT Scan Pulmonary Angiography

A CT pulmonary angiogram is generally not painful. You may feel brief discomfort when the IV is placed and a warm flushing or metallic taste during the contrast injection. The scan itself is painless, though lying still and holding your breath can be uncomfortable and the scanner is noisy. Rare risks include allergic reaction or kidney effects; tell staff about allergies or kidney problems.

A normal pulmonary CT angiogram shows patent pulmonary arteries with uniform contrast opacification and no intraluminal filling defects (no pulmonary emboli). Branches taper normally with expected calibers, lung parenchyma without consolidation, infarction, or significant air‑space disease, no pleural effusion, normal cardiac/right ventricular size, and no vascular malformations, aneurysms, or signs of pulmonary hypertension.

Costs vary widely by country and setting: in India roughly ₹2,000–₹10,000 (≈ $25–$120); in the UK it’s covered by the NHS but private clinics charge about £150–£600; in the US outpatient CT pulmonary angiograms typically cost $500–$3,000, while hospital/emergency bills can be $1,500–$5,000 or more. Final price depends on facility, contrast, and radiology fees.

CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) disadvantages include radiation exposure, contrast‑induced kidney injury and allergic reactions, and limited use in pregnancy or severe renal impairment. It may miss very small subsegmental emboli, produce non‑diagnostic images with motion or obesity, and can reveal incidental findings that prompt unnecessary tests. Requires IV access and carries small risks of contrast extravasation or reaction.

Recovery from a pulmonary angiogram is usually quick: you’ll be observed for several hours with the puncture site monitored for bleeding or bruising. Expect mild soreness and limited activity—avoid heavy lifting for 24–48 hours—and drink fluids to flush contrast. Serious complications are uncommon, but contact your doctor for increasing pain, swelling, heavy bleeding, fever, shortness of breath, or allergic reactions.

A CT angiogram scan itself usually takes about 10–30 minutes. Including registration, IV placement for contrast, positioning and a short post‑scan observation, expect roughly 30–60 minutes at the imaging center. Coronary CT angiography typically runs closer to 20–30 minutes. Total time varies by the body area scanned, patient preparation needs, and whether extra images are required.
