A CT scan with contrast for the paranasal sinuses (PNS) is an X-ray exam where intravenous dye highlights blood vessels and soft tissues to better evaluate sinus infection, polyps, tumors, inflammation, bone erosion, or complications. It improves detection of masses and guides surgical planning. The scan takes minutes; risks include allergic reaction to contrast and potential kidney effects — screening and hydration reduce risk.

Axial and coronal CT scans differ by imaging plane. Axial (transverse) acquires horizontal slices from top to bottom, showing cross-sections through the body — commonly used for head, chest, abdomen. Coronal acquires vertical slices from front to back, displaying the body’s frontal view and better depicting relationships along the head-to-toe axis, useful for sinuses, facial bones, spine and surgical planning.

CT PNS coronal is a computed tomography scan of the paranasal sinuses reconstructed in the coronal plane. It gives detailed cross-sectional views of sinus air cells and bony anatomy, aiding diagnosis of sinusitis, mucosal thickening, polyps, fractures, tumors and anatomical variants that affect drainage. Typically non-contrast and quick, it helps surgical planning but involves low-dose ionizing radiation.

Generally a paranasal sinus (PNS) CT scan is painless and noninvasive. You lie on a table while the scanner rotates; you may feel mild discomfort from staying still, machine noise, or claustrophobia. If intravenous contrast is used you might feel temporary warmth, metallic taste, or a brief sting at the injection site; allergic reactions are rare. Ask staff about anxiety or contrast concerns.

A CT scan of the paranasal sinuses commonly costs: in the United States roughly $250–$1,500; in private UK clinics about £100–£400 (the NHS covers it when clinically indicated); and in India approximately ₹800–₹5,000. A CT scan of the paranasal sinuses is focused on sinuses and nearby bones; it can occasionally show large lesions that extend into the sinuses or cause bone erosion, but it is not reliable for detecting brain tumors. MRI of the brain with contrast is the preferred, more sensitive test. If symptoms suggest a brain lesion, get an MRI.
