A CT scan of the pelvis provides detailed cross-sectional images of pelvic bones, joints and surrounding soft tissues, including the bladder, reproductive organs (uterus, ovaries, prostate), rectum, major blood vessels and lymph nodes. It detects fractures, tumors, stones, abscesses, inflammation, bleeding and post-surgical changes. Intravenous or oral contrast improves visualization of blood flow, tumors and infected or inflamed areas.

A pelvic CT scan is generally safe when medically justified: it provides quick, detailed images while clinicians minimize radiation dose. There is a small increased lifetime cancer risk from ionizing radiation, higher with repeated scans and in children. Contrast dye can cause allergic reactions or affect kidney function. Tell your provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have kidney disease; alternatives (MRI/ultrasound) may be offered.

Pelvic CT can detect cancers of pelvic organs and nearby structures, including colorectal (rectal/sigmoid), bladder, prostate and seminal vesicle tumours, ovarian and other adnexal masses, uterine (endometrial) and cervical cancers, and vaginal/vulvar lesions. It also shows enlarged pelvic lymph nodes, pelvic bone involvement, and metastatic spread for staging; very small or early gynecologic cancers may be less conspicuous.

Prepare by following the clinic’s instructions: you may be asked to fast for a few hours and/or drink oral contrast. Remove metal jewelry and wear loose clothing. Tell staff if you’re pregnant, allergic to iodine/contrast, have kidney disease, or take metformin—metformin is often paused at the scan and for 48 hours after. Bring ID and meds, arrive early, and hydrate unless told otherwise.

The pelvic CT scan itself usually takes 5–10 minutes; modern scanners often acquire images in seconds. The full appointment, including registration, positioning and image reconstruction, commonly lasts 15–45 minutes. If intravenous contrast is required, allow 30–60 minutes to include contrast administration, any waiting periods and brief post‑scan observation. Times vary by facility and individual needs.

CT scans detect many solid tumors and are widely used for staging and finding metastases, but they do not show all cancers. Small lesions, some early-stage tumors, and many blood cancers (like leukemia) or low-contrast lesions can be missed. Diagnosis often requires complementary tests — MRI, PET, ultrasound, blood tests — and definitive confirmation by biopsy.
