CT scan Maxillofacial without contrast

A CT scan of the maxillofacial area without contrast is a noninvasive X‑ray study that creates detailed cross‑sectional images of the facial bones, sinuses, teeth and adjacent soft tissues without intravenous dye. It’s fast and ideal for detecting fractures, bone detail, sinus disease, foreign bodies, dental pathology and trauma, and for preoperative planning when vascular enhancement is not required.

A CT scan can be done without contrast; many common exams — head CT for stroke/trauma, low‑dose lung screening, bone or kidney‑stone evaluations — are routinely non‑contrast. Contrast (usually IV iodinated) is added when better tissue or vessel detail is needed. Use depends on the clinical question, patient allergies, and kidney function, since contrast can cause allergic reactions or kidney injury.

A maxillofacial CT scan provides detailed cross-sectional images of facial bones, jaws, teeth and sinuses, revealing fractures, dislocations, dental problems, sinus disease, tumors, abscesses and foreign bodies. It assesses soft-tissue swelling, orbital and orbital-wall injuries, temporomandibular joints, and extent of infection or cancer spread, aiding surgical planning and trauma evaluation by showing bone detail and nearby soft‑tissue structures.

A CT face is a targeted scan of superficial facial structures—nasal bones, paranasal sinuses and adjacent soft tissue—used for sinus disease, simple fractures or foreign bodies. CT maxillofacial covers a larger region: orbits, maxilla, mandible, zygomas, dental roots and upper neck, often with thin slices and 3D reconstructions for complex facial trauma, surgical or dental implant planning.

A maxillofacial CT scan itself is very quick—typically under a minute to a few minutes of actual scanning. Including registration, positioning, any contrast preparation and brief post-scan instructions, plan for about 10 to 30 minutes at the imaging centre. Cone-beam dental CT often requires only 20 to 40 seconds of exposure, while a conventional facial CT may take a few minutes of scanning.

A CT maxillofacial exam is not exactly the same as a CT sinus study. Maxillofacial CT covers a wider facial region (orbits, zygomas, mandible and sinuses) and is often used for trauma or fractures. CT sinus focuses specifically on the paranasal sinuses with high-resolution, thin slices and coronal reconstructions for sinus disease or surgical planning. Protocols and indications differ.
