CT Scan Leg

A CT scan of the legs produces cross-sectional images showing bone structure, joints, muscles, tendons, fat and blood vessels. It detects fractures, bone lesions or tumors, infections, soft‑tissue injuries, and extent of trauma. With contrast or CT angiography it evaluates arterial disease, blockages or clots. It’s used for diagnosis, staging, surgical planning and monitoring treatment response.

MRI is generally better for leg soft tissues—muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, bone marrow, tumors and infections—and for detecting occult fractures without radiation. CT is superior for detailed bone imaging, complex or acute fractures and rapid trauma assessment. Choice depends on the clinical question, urgency, presence of implants or claustrophobia, and the desire to avoid ionizing radiation.

A CT scan of the leg normally takes about ten to thirty minutes from arrival to completion. The actual imaging is very fast, often seconds to a few minutes, while positioning and setup add time. If intravenous contrast is required, allow an extra ten to twenty minutes for cannulation and monitoring, so the total appointment may extend to roughly thirty to sixty minutes.

Prepare by removing jewelry and metal, wearing a gown, and informing staff about pregnancy or allergies. You’ll lie flat with the affected leg centered and immobilized; straps or cushions may be used. An IV contrast injection may be given if needed. The scanner rotates around the leg while you remain still; breathe normally. Scan takes 10–30 minutes. Afterward, wait briefly if contrast was used.

CT can detect leg blood clots when done as CT venography with intravenous contrast, which images deep veins and thrombus. However, Doppler ultrasound is the preferred first-line test for suspected deep vein thrombosis because it’s widely available, bedside, and avoids radiation. Standard non-contrast CT is less reliable for limb DVT; venous ultrasound or dedicated CT venography are used.

The best scan depends on the suspected cause. MRI is generally preferred for unexplained or persistent leg pain because it shows muscles, ligaments, nerves and spinal causes. Doppler ultrasound is first-line for suspected deep vein thrombosis; X-ray for fractures or bone problems; CT for complex trauma or when MRI isn’t possible. Your doctor will choose the appropriate imaging.
