CT scan left shoulder joint

A shoulder CT scan provides detailed cross-sectional images of the bones and joints around the shoulder—clavicle, scapula, humeral head, glenoid and acromioclavicular and glenohumeral joints. It detects fractures, bone fragment displacement, joint alignment/dislocations, bone spurs and degenerative changes, bone tumors, infections, calcifications, and hardware position after surgery. With contrast or CT arthrography it can better outline cartilage and some soft‑tissue structures.

For a left shoulder CT, the patient typically lies supine, head-first into the gantry, with the left shoulder centered on the scanner. The left arm rests alongside the body in a neutral or slightly externally rotated position (palm up or forward) and is immobilized with cushions or straps. Thin axial images with coronal and sagittal reconstructions evaluate the glenohumeral joint and surrounding structures.

A shoulder CT scan usually takes about 10–15 minutes of actual scanning. Including registration, positioning and image checks, expect 15–30 minutes at the radiology department. If intravenous contrast is needed, add roughly 15–30 minutes for IV placement and brief monitoring, making the total about 30–60 minutes. Prep or scheduling delays can extend this.

Initial X‑rays are usually done to rule out fractures or arthritis. For soft‑tissue problems (rotator cuff tears, tendinopathy, labral injury) MRI is the best single test; MR arthrography is preferred for subtle labral/intra‑articular tears. Ultrasound is excellent for dynamic, cost‑effective rotator cuff assessment and guided procedures. CT is useful for complex fractures or surgical planning. Choice depends on clinical suspicion.

MRI is generally better for shoulder soft-tissue problems—rotator cuff, labrum, tendons, ligaments and cartilage—and avoids ionizing radiation. CT provides superior bone detail and is preferred for complex fractures, preoperative planning and 3D reconstructions. CT is faster but uses radiation; MRI may be contraindicated with some implants. The optimal choice depends on the suspected injury and clinician judgment.

A CT scan appointment usually lasts 15–30 minutes. The actual scan often takes 5–10 minutes, but preparation (positioning, IV cannula for contrast) and post‑scan monitoring can extend total time to 30–60 minutes. Complex studies or delayed scheduling may lengthen the visit. Ask your imaging centre about fasting, contrast risks and expected arrival time.
