CT Scan Left Hip Joint

A CT scan of the left hip is a diagnostic X‑ray test that produces detailed cross‑sectional images of the hip joint, bones, cartilage and surrounding soft tissues. It helps detect fractures, arthritis, infections, tumors and guides surgical planning. The outpatient exam takes minutes, may use intravenous contrast, requires lying still, and exposes you to a small amount of ionizing radiation interpreted by a radiologist.

A hip CT scan typically requires about 10–20 minutes of actual imaging. Including registration, positioning, and any contrast injection or brief observation, plan for 20–45 minutes at the clinic. Scans without contrast are quicker; contrast studies add prep and monitoring time. Complex cases or busy departments can lengthen your visit, so check with the imaging center beforehand.

A CT scan shows detailed bone structure and is excellent for detecting fractures, advanced arthritis, bone deformities, joint alignment issues, and some bone lesions in a bad hip. It’s less sensitive than MRI for early cartilage, labral tears, soft-tissue injury, and very early avascular necrosis. Plain X-rays are often first; CT is used when more bone detail or surgical planning is needed.

During a hip CT the patient lies supine on the CT table with the hips centered in the gantry. Legs are extended with toes pointed upward; the scanned side is positioned at the scanner’s center. Arms are moved away from the hips (above the head or at the sides), and cushions/straps may be used to stabilize the pelvis. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly to reduce motion.

Hip pain can arise from joint wear (osteoarthritis), inflammation of bursae or tendons (bursitis, tendinitis), labral tears, femoroacetabular impingement, fractures, avascular necrosis, or inflammatory arthritis. Nerve irritation or referred pain from the lower back often causes hip discomfort. Less commonly, infection, dislocation, or pediatric conditions (like slipped capital femoral epiphysis) require specialist evaluation and treatment.

For a hip CT scan, wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal (no zippers, buttons, underwire, or metal fastenings). You may be asked to change into a hospital gown. Remove jewelry, belts, piercings, watches, hearing aids, and any removable prostheses. Avoid metal-containing bras or underwear. Follow staff instructions about contrast dye, fasting, and bringing previous imaging or implant information.
