A CT scan of the chest and upper abdomen is an imaging test using X-rays and computer processing to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the lungs, heart, blood vessels, liver, spleen, pancreas, and nearby structures. It helps detect infections, tumors, injuries, blood clots, and inflammation. Contrast dye may be used to highlight vessels and organs; the test is quick but involves low-dose radiation.

An upper abdomen CT scan provides detailed images of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, upper kidneys, adrenal glands, stomach, duodenum, major blood vessels and nearby lymph nodes. It detects tumors, inflammation, infection, abscesses, bleeding, stones, biliary or vascular disease, and trauma-related injuries. Contrast dye improves visualization of blood flow and tissue abnormalities to help guide diagnosis and treatment.

A chest and abdominal CT scan is used to evaluate pain, trauma, or unexplained symptoms; detect infections, inflammation, bleeding, or organ injury; diagnose or stage cancers and tumors; identify pulmonary embolism, aortic aneurysm, kidney stones, appendicitis, pancreatitis, or lung disease; guide biopsies or procedures; and monitor treatment response or surgical planning. It provides detailed cross-sectional images not seen on regular X-rays.

A CT scan of the chest and abdomen typically takes only a few minutes to image (often under 10 minutes for the actual scan). With setup, IV contrast injection, monitoring and brief waits, the full appointment usually lasts about 20–40 minutes. Without contrast it can be shorter; emergency or complex studies may take longer.

Doctors order chest CT scans to get detailed images of the lungs, heart, blood vessels and chest structures. Common reasons include diagnosing infections (pneumonia), detecting lung cancer or metastases, evaluating pulmonary embolism, assessing trauma and chronic lung disease (fibrosis, COPD), investigating unexplained chest pain or persistent cough, guiding biopsies or drainage, and monitoring treatment response or surgical planning.

For a chest/abdomen CT, follow facility instructions: you may need to fast 2–6 hours and drink prescribed oral contrast before arrival. Inform staff about allergies, kidney disease, pregnancy, and medications (metformin may need temporary stopping). Bring ID and a medication list, remove metal jewelry, wear loose clothing, and expect an IV for iodinated contrast and possible blood tests to check kidney function. Arrive early.
