3D reconstruction in CT is a post-processing technique that combines axial slice data into three-dimensional images using algorithms (volume/surface rendering and MIP). It shows spatial relationships of bones, vessels, and organs, aiding surgical planning, trauma/fracture assessment, and vascular studies. It enables multiplanar reformats and interactive viewing but depends on slice quality, contrast timing, and suitable protocols for accuracy.

A CT scan acquires X‑ray slices of the body to produce detailed 2D cross‑sectional images. A 3D CT is a post‑processing technique that reconstructs those slices into a three‑dimensional volume-rendered image you can rotate and manipulate. 3D views improve spatial understanding for surgical planning, fracture assessment, or vascular mapping, but use the same original scan data and usually don't require extra radiation.

Prepare by wearing loose clothing and removing jewelry, glasses, and metal objects. Bring ID, referral, and a list of medications/allergies. You may need to fast or pause certain meds if IV contrast is planned—tell staff about pregnancy, diabetes, or kidney issues. Drink fluids unless told not to, arrive early for paperwork, change into a gown if required, and follow the technologist’s instructions to stay still during the scan.

A 3D CT scan’s raw imaging is very quick—often seconds to a few minutes. Including registration, positioning, possible contrast injection and monitoring, and on‑machine 3D reconstruction, expect about 15–60 minutes overall. Simple non‑contrast exams often finish within 10–20 minutes; contrast‑enhanced or multiphase/angiographic studies and prep/recovery can extend the visit toward 30–60 minutes.

3D reconstruction is important because it transforms imaging data into accurate, lifelike models that improve diagnosis, surgical planning, and treatment monitoring. It clarifies complex anatomy, helps tailor interventions and implants, reduces operative time and complications, and enables better patient communication and education. 3D CT scans expose you to ionizing radiation, slightly increasing lifetime cancer risk. If contrast dye is used, possible side effects include allergic reactions (mild itching to rarely severe anaphylaxis) and contrast-induced kidney injury, especially with preexisting kidney disease. Other effects: discomfort from lying still, injection-site pain or extravasation, and potential fetal harm in pregnancy. Claustrophobia or anxiety can occur.
