It can show calcifications and complex fracture patterns that X-rays miss, guide surgical planning and hardware placement, and offers limited assessment of surrounding soft tissues compared with MRI.

An ankle CT scan itself usually takes only a few minutes (often 5–10 minutes) to acquire images. Allow 15–30 minutes for the whole appointment to include check-in, changing, positioning and technologist review. If contrast dye is needed, add time for injection and brief monitoring (often an extra 15–30 minutes). Exact times vary by facility and clinical complexity.

Yes. CT scans produce detailed cross-sectional images that show bone structure clearly, making them excellent for detecting fractures (including complex or subtle ones), assessing bone loss, tumors, infections, and degenerative changes. CT gives precise information about cortical and trabecular bone and can create 3-D reconstructions for surgical planning. For measuring bone density, DEXA remains the standard, but CT can still provide useful assessments.

A standard CT scan is excellent for visualizing bone but is not ideal for directly showing torn ligaments, which are soft tissue. MRI is the preferred test for detecting ligament tears. Ultrasound can evaluate some superficial ligaments. In certain cases, CT arthrography or detecting bone avulsions on CT can provide indirect evidence of ligament injury when MRI isn’t available.
