What is a CT SCAN ABDOMEN Test in Chennai ?
What is CT SCAN ABDOMEN?
A CT scan of the abdomen uses X-rays and a computer to make detailed cross-sectional pictures of organs, blood vessels, and tissues. It does not measure a blood chemical; it shows structure and changes in organs. It is important because it reveals tumors, infections, inflammation, bleeding, stones, and blockages. It is one of the most commonly ordered blood tests worldwide and plays a key role in both preventive screening and the investigation of liver disease.
What does CT SCAN ABDOMEN measure?
Doctors use it to diagnose sudden severe pain, evaluate injury, plan surgery, guide biopsies or drainages, and follow cancer treatment. Contrast dye may be given to highlight blood flow and improve detail. The scan is quick and widely available. Results are reported in International Units per litre (U/L). Mild elevations (2–3× normal) typically indicate reversible changes. Values above 10× normal suggest acute injury requiring urgent investigation.
What symptoms suggest CT SCAN ABDOMEN may be needed?
A doctor may order CT SCAN ABDOMEN when a patient reports fatigue or persistent low energy, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark amber or tea-coloured urine, pale or clay-coloured stools, upper right abdominal discomfort, nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal swelling, and unexplained weight loss. In Chennai, residents of T Nagar and Perambur commonly present for this test after noticing these symptoms during a routine or preventive consultation.
How is CT SCAN ABDOMEN performed?
A certified phlebotomist cleans the inner elbow, locates a vein, inserts a fine sterile needle, and draws the required blood (typically 5 to 10 mL). The procedure takes 3 to 5 minutes. You feel a brief pinch at insertion and mild pressure during collection. You can eat, drink, drive, and resume all activities immediately afterwards.
How accurate is CT SCAN ABDOMEN?
NABL-accredited laboratory results are analytically reliable. GetVisit's logistics network maintains cold-chain transport from collection to the processing lab, preserving sample integrity. Quality control is independently audited by NABL at regular intervals.
Are there any risks to CT SCAN ABDOMEN?
There are no significant medical risks beyond those of a standard blood draw. Vasovagal fainting (rare) is more likely if you are fasting, anxious, or dehydrated. Drink 2 to 3 glasses of water before the appointment, remain seated during the draw, and stay seated for 2 to 3 minutes afterwards. Inform the phlebotomist if you have fainted during previous draws.
CT SCAN ABDOMEN Test Preparation in Chennai
Fasting and dietary instructions:
Fast for 8 to 12 hours before the test. Water is allowed and encouraged , drink 2 to 3 glasses before leaving home. Avoid tea, coffee, juice, food, alcohol, and supplements during the fasting window.
Medication guidance:
Continue all regularly prescribed medication unless your doctor has specifically instructed otherwise. Inform lab staff about all prescription drugs, supplements, herbal preparations, and protein powders you are taking.
What to bring:
Carry your doctor's test order, a government-issued photo ID, and your OPD insurance card. If you have had this test before, bring previous reports , your doctor can compare results over time.
Timing:
Book the earliest available morning slot. For fasting tests, an overnight fast followed by a morning draw represents the optimal balance between adequate fasting duration and test accuracy.

Why Take a CT SCAN ABDOMEN Test in Chennai ?
When does a doctor order CT SCAN ABDOMEN?
Doctors order CT SCAN ABDOMEN when a patient reports jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, persistent fatigue, nausea, or upper right abdominal pain. It is also routinely ordered before starting hepatotoxic medications (statins, anti-TB drugs, anticonvulsants) and periodically during their use.
Who should get CT SCAN ABDOMEN done in Chennai?
Hepatitis B prevalence in Tamil Nadu is estimated at around 3 to 4%. NAFLD is also rising rapidly among Chennai's large young professional population due to sedentary IT-sector jobs, high-carbohydrate diets, and rising obesity rates in areas like OMR and T Nagar. CT SCAN ABDOMEN is often ordered alone or as part of an abdominal imaging suite when symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, fever, jaundice or trauma occur. It helps diagnose appendicitis, bowel obstruction, kidney stones, tumors, abscesses and internal bleeding, and to monitor cancer treatment. Regular liver testing benefits: regular alcohol drinkers, individuals with BMI above 28, anyone on long-term medication including statins or anti-TB drugs, people with a personal or family history of hepatitis B or C, those with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome, and all adults above 40 in annual preventive panels. In Chennai, residents of Porur, Egmore, and similar areas with sedentary lifestyles and calorie-dense diets face particularly elevated metabolic liver risk.
What conditions can CT SCAN ABDOMEN help diagnose?
Very high ALT and AST (10–50× normal) with normal ALP suggests acute hepatocellular injury , viral hepatitis, drug toxicity, or ischaemia. Predominantly elevated ALP and GGT with modest transaminases suggests bile duct obstruction or primary biliary cholangitis. An AST:ALT ratio above 2 suggests alcoholic hepatitis. Persistently low albumin with elevated bilirubin indicates advanced cirrhosis.
What do CT SCAN ABDOMEN results mean?
Mildly elevated ALT or AST (2–3× normal): fatty liver, obesity, or medication effect , often reversible. Moderately elevated (3–10×): active viral hepatitis or drug toxicity , requires urgent investigation. Severely elevated (>10×): acute liver injury , a medical emergency. High bilirubin: liver processing failure, bile duct obstruction, or haemolysis. Low albumin: significant loss of liver synthetic function, seen in advanced cirrhosis or malnutrition.
How often should CT SCAN ABDOMEN be repeated?
Adults with no liver risk factors and a previously normal result: annually. Patients with NAFLD or treated hepatitis: every 6 months. Patients on hepatotoxic medication: baseline before starting, then at 1 month, 3 months, and every 6 months during treatment. Patients with active liver disease: at intervals specified by their gastroenterologist.
What happens after CT SCAN ABDOMEN results are ready?
Book a follow-up consultation after reviewing your results. GetVisit stores your reports alongside your previous test history, so your doctor sees your full health trend , not just today's snapshot. This longitudinal context significantly improves the clinical value of each repeat test.
