CT SCAN ABDOMEN WITH PANCREATIC PROTOCOL

A CT abdomen with pancreatic protocol is a contrast-enhanced CT scan optimized to image the pancreas and nearby vessels. It uses thin slices and multiphase timing (arterial/pancreatic parenchymal and portal venous phases) after IV contrast, sometimes with oral contrast. It evaluates masses, inflammation, cysts, ductal and vascular involvement, and aids staging or planning interventions. Patients usually fast and need renal/allergy checks.

To prepare for a pancreatic CT, follow fasting instructions (usually 4–6 hours) and drink any oral contrast as directed. Tell staff about allergies (iodine/contrast), recent pregnancy, and all medications—your doctor may advise stopping metformin and will check kidney function before IV contrast. Wear loose clothing, remove jewelry, bring ID and medication list, arrive early, and expect an IV cannula for injected contrast.

Pancreatic CT is typically multiphase. After IV contrast, the pancreatic (arterial/parenchymal) phase is obtained about 30–40 seconds post-injection to optimize pancreatic enhancement; the portal‑venous phase follows at roughly 60–70 seconds. Delayed images may be taken at 90–120 seconds when needed. Exact timing can vary by scanner, protocol and clinical indication, so follow radiologist instruction.

A CT scan of the pancreas involves lying on a motorized table that moves through a circular scanner while X-ray images are taken. You usually fast and remove metal; an IV contrast dye is commonly injected (sometimes oral contrast too) to better show the pancreas. Scanning requires brief breath-holds, takes only minutes, and staff monitor you afterward for any allergic reactions to the dye.

A pancreatic CT appointment usually takes 30–60 minutes overall. The scan itself is quick—often under 10 minutes—but preparation (IV line placement, contrast injection and timed arterial/venous phases) typically adds 10–30 minutes. If oral contrast or delayed imaging is required, the visit can extend to 60–90 minutes. You may be asked to fast for a few hours beforehand.

Pancreatitis can range from mild to life‑threatening. Acute pancreatitis may cause severe abdominal pain, dehydration, organ failure, infected pancreatic necrosis, or systemic inflammation requiring hospitalization and intensive support. Chronic pancreatitis leads to ongoing pain, malabsorption, weight loss, and diabetes. Early medical assessment and treatment are important to reduce complications and mortality.
