A color Doppler on a breast ultrasound is an imaging technique that overlays color onto conventional ultrasound to show blood flow within breast tissue and lesions in real time. It noninvasively displays flow direction and relative velocity, helping differentiate cysts from solid masses, assess lesion vascularity (which may suggest malignancy or inflammation), and guide biopsy or treatment decisions safely.

Color Doppler ultrasound evaluates blood flow within tissues and can detect abnormal or increased vascular patterns that often accompany tumors. However, it cannot definitively diagnose cancer by itself. Findings raise suspicion and guide further assessment—combined with grayscale ultrasound, other imaging and biopsy for confirmation. Its accuracy is limited by small-vessel resolution and operator technique.

A warm gel and a handheld probe are used; you might feel mild pressure or slight discomfort if the area is tender or the probe presses firmly. Some exams require a full bladder or an internal probe, which can cause temporary discomfort. The test is quick, safe, and does not use ionizing radiation.

On ultrasound, breast cancers usually appear hypoechoic — darker than surrounding tissue — often with irregular margins, posterior acoustic shadowing, and a taller‑than‑wide shape. They may show internal blood flow on Doppler; Doppler colors (red/blue) only indicate flow direction, not malignancy. Some lesions are complex with mixed echogenicity, so ultrasound must be correlated with mammography and biopsy for diagnosis.

A color Doppler ultrasound visualizes blood flow and measures its direction and speed in vessels and organs. It’s used to detect blockages, narrowing, blood clots, aneurysms, varicose veins and impaired circulation; assess heart valve function and congenital heart defects; and monitor placental and fetal blood flow in pregnancy.
