What is a Clotting Time Test?
This test measures how quickly your blood forms a clot. It times the process that stops bleeding after an injury. Clotting is important to prevent excessive blood loss and to keep blood flowing normally. Abnormal clotting can mean bleeding disorders, liver problems, vitamin K deficiency, or risk of dangerous clots. Doctors use clotting time to screen for bleeding tendency, to check before surgery, and to monitor blood-thinning medicines. Results are combined with other blood tests to find the exact cause. Your doctor will compare results with your symptoms and medical history.

Why Take a Clotting Time Test?
Clotting time is often part of a coagulation profile ordered when someone has unexplained bleeding, easy bruising, or before surgery. Doctors may request it for frequent nosebleeds, heavy periods, or slow wound healing. It helps diagnose hemophilia, liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, and other clotting disorders, and it monitors anticoagulant therapy. Abnormal results can come from medications, liver problems, nutritional deficiencies, infection, or inherited conditions, and a family history of bleeding makes testing more important.
