Triple-phase CECT abdomen is a contrast-enhanced CT scan obtained in three timed phases after IV contrast—typically arterial, portal-venous and delayed—to capture blood-flow dynamics. This multiphase study improves detection and characterization of liver lesions, focal tumors, vascular abnormalities and trauma by demonstrating enhancement patterns (arterial uptake, portal perfusion and washout) not seen on single-phase scans.

Triple contrast CT of the abdomen uses three contrast routes—oral, intravenous and rectal—to outline bowel lumen, blood vessels and organ enhancement. This combination improves detection of bowel injury, inflammation, perforation, abscesses, tumors and vascular abnormalities and aids surgical planning. The scan requires drinking oral contrast and receiving IV (and sometimes rectal) contrast; risks include allergic reaction and kidney effects.

Triple-phase CT acquires images before contrast, during the arterial phase, and during the portal-venous (sometimes delayed) phase to characterize lesion vascularity and enhancement patterns. It improves detection and characterization of liver, pancreatic, and renal tumors, identifies active bleeding, delineates vascular anatomy, and guides staging and treatment planning. Different phases reveal features that single-phase scans can miss.

Costs vary widely by country and setting. In India a triphasic CECT abdomen typically ranges around ₹2,000–₹10,000 in private centres. In the United States expect roughly $500–$3,000. In the UK it is free on the NHS; private scans often cost about £200–£800. Final price depends on facility, contrast use, add‑on reports, and emergency or inpatient status.

A contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) scan is generally not painful. Lying on the table and the scan itself are painless, though IV insertion can cause a brief pinch. Injection of contrast may produce warm flushing, a metallic taste, or mild nausea briefly. Serious allergic reactions or kidney-related issues are rare; discuss allergies, medications, and kidney problems with staff beforehand.

A triple‑phase CT typically takes about 20–45 minutes in total. The actual image acquisition is quick—usually 5–15 minutes—but preparation (IV contrast insertion), three timed contrast phases (arterial, portal venous, delayed), and brief post‑scan monitoring extend the appointment to around half an hour, sometimes up to 60 minutes if complications or extra imaging are needed.
