Contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) scans are generally painless and quick. You may feel a brief sting when the IV is placed and a warm, metallic taste or flushing when the contrast is injected. Most effects are mild and short-lived; serious allergic reactions are rare. Tell staff about allergies, asthma, or kidney problems beforehand so they can take precautions and monitor you.

Generally you may drink clear water up to two hours before an abdominal CECT. Avoid solid food for 4–6 hours beforehand. Some centers require oral contrast and different timing, so follow the instructions you were given. If you have kidney disease, are diabetic (on metformin), pregnant, or expect sedation, inform the radiology team—specific fasting or medication-holding rules may apply.
