CECT (Contrast Enhanced Ct Scan) Whole Abdomen

A CT CECT of the whole abdomen is a contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan that produces detailed cross-sectional images of abdominal organs and blood vessels. Intravenous (and sometimes oral) contrast improves visibility of liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, bowel, lymph nodes and blood flow. It helps detect tumors, inflammation, infection, bleeding, stones and vascular problems. The scan is quick (minutes), though preparation and contrast monitoring may take longer.

Contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) costs vary widely by country and facility. In India it commonly ranges from about ₹2,000–10,000 depending on the centre and scanned region. On the UK NHS it’s provided free; private clinics typically charge roughly £150–£700. In the United States self-pay prices usually fall between about $300 and $3,000, with insured patients paying lower out-of-pocket amounts.

Contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) scans are generally painless and quick. You may feel a brief sting when the IV is placed and a warm, metallic taste or flushing when the contrast is injected. Most effects are mild and short-lived; serious allergic reactions are rare. Tell staff about allergies, asthma, or kidney problems beforehand so they can take precautions and monitor you.

Generally you may drink clear water up to two hours before an abdominal CECT. Avoid solid food for 4–6 hours beforehand. Some centers require oral contrast and different timing, so follow the instructions you were given. If you have kidney disease, are diabetic (on metformin), pregnant, or expect sedation, inform the radiology team—specific fasting or medication-holding rules may apply.
