A CECT urogram is a contrast-enhanced CT scan of the urinary tract—kidneys, ureters and bladder—performed in multiple phases (non-contrast and timed contrast/excretory phases) to detect stones, tumours, obstruction or structural abnormalities. It requires IV iodinated contrast after assessing kidney function and allergies; fasting and hydration are usually recommended. Risks include radiation exposure, allergic reactions and contrast-induced kidney injury.

A CT urogram with contrast provides detailed images of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder, showing anatomy, urinary tract stones (with a noncontrast phase), masses or urothelial tumors, strictures, obstructions, leaks, and trauma. Contrast-enhanced phases assess renal parenchyma and excretory function, detect tumors, infections, vascular abnormalities, and the cause of hematuria or flank pain.

Before a CT urogram: arrange recent blood tests to check kidney function, and tell the team about iodine/contrast allergies and current medicines (especially metformin — usually paused at contrast and for 48 hours afterwards). You may be asked to fast for 4–6 hours, drink plenty of water, and drink any oral contrast per instructions. Wear loose clothing, remove metal, arrive early, and follow bladder/arrival directions.

A contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) scan is not usually painful. Lying on the table and the scan itself are painless; placing an IV causes a brief pinch. When the contrast is injected you may feel warmth, a metallic taste, flushing, or mild nausea for a short time. Serious allergic reactions are rare. Tell staff about allergies, pregnancy, or kidney disease beforehand.
