A CECT abdomen and pelvis is a contrast-enhanced CT scan using intravenous (and sometimes oral) contrast to produce detailed cross-sectional images of abdominal and pelvic organs, blood vessels and tissues. It evaluates pain, infection, inflammation, tumors, bleeding and trauma. Preparation may include fasting and checks for kidney function or contrast allergy. The test is quick but involves ionizing radiation.

The test is quick and noninvasive but involves radiation and possible contrast-related risks (allergic reaction, kidney effects); hydration and screening reduce risks.

IV contrast for CECT (contrast-enhanced CT) is an iodine-containing liquid injected into a vein during a CT scan to enhance visualization of blood vessels, organs, and lesions. It increases contrast between tissues, improving detection of tumors, inflammation, bleeding, and vascular problems. Side effects are usually mild (warmth, metallic taste); allergic reactions and kidney-related risks are uncommon but screened for beforehand.

Confirm indication and obtain informed consent. Check allergy history and pregnancy status. Review renal function (serum creatinine/eGFR) and ensure adequate hydration. Instruct fasting 4–6 hours for solids; allow clear fluids. Establish reliable IV access. Advise withholding metformin at time of contrast and for 48 hours if renal impairment (restart after reassessing renal function). Premedicate if prior reaction; remove metal and explain breath-hold instructions.

Contrast-enhanced CT can visualize vascular structures and solid organs within the scanned region. Typical findings include brain and intracranial vessels (head scans), neck soft tissues, chest structures (lungs, heart, mediastinum, great vessels), and abdominal–pelvic organs such as liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, adrenals, stomach, bowel, mesentery, bladder, and reproductive organs, plus bones and regional lymph nodes.
