What is a Cardiac PET CT Test in Chennai ?
What is Cardiac PET CT?
Cardiac PET CT is an imaging scan that uses a small radioactive tracer plus CT images to show blood flow and metabolism in the heart muscle. It measures how well blood reaches different parts of the heart and whether tissue is alive or scarred. This matters because good blood flow keeps the heart pumping efficiently. Cardiologists use it both preventively (to quantify long-term cardiac risk) and acutely (to detect heart muscle injury within hours of symptom onset).
What does Cardiac PET CT measure?
The test helps detect coronary artery disease, areas of reduced blood flow (ischemia), heart muscle damage after a heart attack, and inflammatory conditions. Doctors use the results to decide on treatments like medicines, angioplasty, bypass surgery, or further testing. The scan can guide care and help predict future heart risk. For lipid panels, cardiovascular risk is not assessed from a single value but from the full profile interpreted alongside age, blood pressure, smoking history, family history, and diabetes status.
What symptoms suggest Cardiac PET CT may be needed?
A doctor may order Cardiac PET CT when a patient reports chest pain or tightness (especially on exertion), shortness of breath, palpitations or irregular heartbeat, unexplained fatigue, dizziness, ankle or leg swelling, and pain radiating to the left arm, jaw, or back. In Chennai, residents of Tambaram and Guindy commonly present for this test after noticing these symptoms during a routine or preventive consultation.
How is Cardiac PET CT performed?
A certified phlebotomist cleans the inner elbow, locates a vein, inserts a fine sterile needle, and draws the required blood (typically 5 to 10 mL). The procedure takes 3 to 5 minutes. You feel a brief pinch at insertion and mild pressure during collection. You can eat, drink, drive, and resume all activities immediately afterwards.
How accurate is Cardiac PET CT?
Rare causes of inaccurate results include: very high biotin supplementation (interferes with immunoassays), haemolysed samples from difficult venipuncture, or failure to fast when fasting was required. Following preparation instructions and using a trained phlebotomist minimises these risks.
Are there any risks to Cardiac PET CT?
There are no significant medical risks beyond those of a standard blood draw. Vasovagal fainting (rare) is more likely if you are fasting, anxious, or dehydrated. Drink 2 to 3 glasses of water before the appointment, remain seated during the draw, and stay seated for 2 to 3 minutes afterwards. Inform the phlebotomist if you have fainted during previous draws.
Cardiac PET CT Test Preparation in Chennai
Fasting and dietary instructions:
Fast for 8 to 12 hours before the test. Water is allowed and encouraged , drink 2 to 3 glasses before leaving home. Avoid tea, coffee, juice, food, alcohol, and supplements during the fasting window.
Medication guidance:
Do not stop statin medication before a lipid panel. The test measures your on-treatment values, which is the clinically relevant result for monitoring effectiveness.
What to bring:
Bring your doctor's prescription or test requisition, a valid photo ID, and your corporate health insurance card if using cashless OPD. Wear short sleeves or clothing with sleeves that roll up easily.
Timing:
Book the earliest available morning slot. For fasting tests, an overnight fast followed by a morning draw represents the optimal balance between adequate fasting duration and test accuracy.

Why Take a Cardiac PET CT Test in Chennai ?
When does a doctor order Cardiac PET CT?
Cardiologists order Cardiac PET CT when a patient presents with chest pain, exertional shortness of breath, palpitations, or unexplained fatigue. It is also routinely ordered in cardiovascular risk stratification for adults above 35 with hypertension, diabetes, a high BMI, a sedentary lifestyle, or a first-degree relative who experienced a cardiac event before 60.
Who should get Cardiac PET CT done in Chennai?
Tamil Nadu is reported to have among India's highest coronary artery disease rates. The Madras Diabetes Research Foundation has found elevated cardiovascular risk factors in a significant share of Chennai's urban adults , particularly in high-stress professional zones like Nungambakkam, Anna Nagar, and Adyar. Cardiac PET CT is used in advanced cardiac imaging panels when precise information about blood flow and heart muscle health is needed. Doctors may order it for people with chest pain, abnormal stress tests, unexplained breathlessness, or prior heart attacks to check for blockages, ischemia, scar tissue, or inflammation. Adults above 35 in Chennai , particularly those working in Ashok Nagar, Nungambakkam, and other urban centres , should have cardiac markers tested annually even without symptoms. Smokers, people with high blood pressure, a sedentary desk job, BMI above 25, or a first-degree relative with a heart attack before 60 face elevated risk that annual testing actively manages.
What conditions can Cardiac PET CT help diagnose?
An elevated LDL with low HDL indicates dyslipidaemia , the primary driver of coronary artery disease. Elevated triglycerides above 500 mg/dL require specific treatment. Troponin above the 99th percentile indicates myocardial injury. High-sensitivity CRP above 2 mg/L indicates vascular inflammation that independently increases cardiac risk beyond what lipids alone predict.
What do Cardiac PET CT results mean?
LDL above 130 mg/dL: elevated risk , your cardiologist will advise dietary changes or statin therapy based on your overall risk score. LDL above 190 mg/dL may indicate familial hypercholesterolaemia. HDL below 40 mg/dL (men) or 50 mg/dL (women): reduced protection. Triglycerides above 200 mg/dL: diet, alcohol, or diabetes-related. Troponin above the 99th percentile: heart muscle injury , may signal a heart attack, especially if rising on serial testing.
How often should Cardiac PET CT be repeated?
Low-risk adults with a normal lipid profile: annually. Patients on statin therapy: every 6 months to confirm LDL is meeting the treatment target. Post-cardiac event patients: every 3 to 6 months as directed by their cardiologist. Patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia: every 3 months until stable on treatment.
What happens after Cardiac PET CT results are ready?
Your GetVisit digital report is delivered to your phone as soon as results are authorised. Share it directly with your doctor via the app, or book a consultation with a GetVisit-verified specialist on the same platform. Critical values outside a safe range are flagged by the laboratory for urgent clinical review.
