Cardiac PET CT

A cardiac PET-CT scan combines positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) to create detailed images of heart blood flow, metabolism and structure. After an intravenous radiotracer, PET measures myocardial perfusion and viability, while CT provides anatomical reference and attenuation correction. It helps detect coronary artery disease, assess scar versus viable tissue, guide revascularization decisions, and is a noninvasive test with low radiation exposure.

A cardiac PET scan is generally more accurate than a standard exercise stress test: PET offers higher sensitivity and specificity, quantitative myocardial blood flow assessment, and improved imaging in obese patients or when baseline ECG limits interpretation. However, PET is more expensive, less available and involves radiation or pharmacologic stress. Exercise or nuclear stress tests remain first-line; PET is used when higher diagnostic accuracy is needed.

A cardiac PET scan is generally not painful. You’ll receive an intravenous radiotracer that may sting briefly or cause a warm flush; the scan itself is painless though you must lie still. Some people feel mild anxiety, claustrophobia, or temporary side effects if a pharmacologic stress agent is used. Minor bruising at the injection site is possible; serious reactions are rare.

A cardiac PET scan typically costs: in the United States roughly $1,000–$5,000 (out‑of‑pocket may be much lower with insurance); in the United Kingdom it’s usually provided free through public healthcare but private scans often run about £800–£2,500; in India costs commonly run around ₹10,000–₹35,000. Final patient charges depend on location, facility, and insurance coverage.

A cardiac PET scan is generally safe: it uses a small amount of radioactive tracer and carries a low radiation risk. Serious complications are rare, though pharmacologic stress agents can cause temporary symptoms (flushing, breathlessness, chest discomfort). Tell your care team if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, allergic, or have significant kidney or heart conditions. Benefits usually outweigh risks; follow facility instructions about breastfeeding and medications.

A cardiac PET‑CT scan’s imaging portion usually takes about 20–45 minutes. However, the full appointment commonly lasts 1.5–3 hours to allow IV access, radiotracer injection and uptake time, and rest/stress phases if required. Times vary with protocol, patient preparation (fasting, medication hold) and monitoring; arrive early and follow pretest instructions to avoid delays.
