If Brucella is positive, it indicates brucellosis and requires prompt medical treatment. Expect prolonged combination antibiotic therapy (commonly doxycycline plus rifampicin or doxycycline with an aminoglycoside) and close follow‑up for complications such as bone/joint infection or endocarditis. Blood cultures and imaging may be repeated, exposures (e.g. unpasteurized dairy, livestock) investigated, and public‑health notification considered.

A PCR test for brucellosis is a molecular assay that detects Brucella DNA in blood, bone marrow or tissue by amplifying specific genetic sequences. It provides rapid, specific identification, useful early in infection or when cultures are negative. Sensitivity varies with sample type and bacterial load. PCR complements serology and cultures to confirm active infection and guide treatment; it requires a specialized laboratory.

A Brucella test is performed to detect brucellosis in people with compatible symptoms such as fever, sweats, fatigue, or joint and back pain, or who have had risk exposures like livestock contact or unpasteurized dairy. It confirms infection, guides antibiotic choice and treatment duration, helps monitor response and relapses, and supports public-health actions to prevent spread and serious complications.

The gold-standard diagnostic test for brucellosis is isolation of Brucella spp. by culture, typically from blood or bone marrow. Bone marrow culture is more sensitive than blood, and automated blood-culture systems increase yield. Culture provides a definitive diagnosis, species identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility. Serology and PCR are useful adjuncts but are not the definitive reference standard.

Brucella bacteria cause brucellosis (also called undulant, Malta or Mediterranean fever), a zoonotic infection transmitted from infected animals—commonly cattle, goats, sheep and pigs—via unpasteurized dairy, direct contact or inhalation. Brucellosis is not usually spread person-to-person. Infection mainly occurs from contact with infected animals or eating unpasteurized dairy. Human-to-human transmission is extremely rare, with occasional reports (sexual contact, breastfeeding, blood transfusion, or vertical transmission) but not a common route. Standard precautions—avoid unpasteurized dairy, use protective measures with animals, and follow infection-control practices—prevent spread.
