Carotid and vertebral Doppler are noninvasive ultrasound tests that use Doppler flow and imaging to evaluate blood flow in the carotid and vertebral arteries supplying the brain. They detect narrowing (stenosis), plaque, reduced or turbulent flow, and dissections, helping assess stroke risk and guide treatment or monitoring. The exam is painless, performed with a transducer on the neck, and gives real-time flow velocities and waveforms.

A bilateral carotid Doppler is a noninvasive ultrasound exam that evaluates blood flow in both left and right carotid arteries in the neck. Warning signs of a blocked carotid artery include sudden weakness, numbness or paralysis on one side of the body (face, arm, leg); sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech; sudden vision loss or blurring in one or both eyes; dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; and a sudden, severe headache with no known cause. Brief, transient episodes (TIAs) are also red flags. Seek immediate medical attention.
