Beta Human Chorionic Gonodotropin (Serum Beta HCG), in Pimpri Chinchwad

A serum β-hCG level above about 5 mIU/mL is generally considered positive for pregnancy; levels between 5 and 25 mIU/mL are indeterminate and warrant repeat testing. Many labs use >25 mIU/mL as a definitive result. Urine tests typically become positive around 25–50 mIU/mL. Repeat or serial measurements help confirm pregnancy by showing an appropriate rise over 48–72 hours.

A positive beta-hCG usually means pregnancy, but it doesn’t confirm location or viability. Your clinician will order serial quantitative beta-hCG tests to check appropriate rise and a transvaginal ultrasound once levels reach the diagnostic threshold to confirm an intrauterine pregnancy. Abnormal rise may indicate ectopic or molar pregnancy. Seek early prenatal care, start folic acid, check Rh status, and seek urgent care for severe pain or bleeding.

Normal hCG varies widely. Nonpregnant adults: <5 mIU/mL. In pregnancy it rises rapidly in the first trimester, peaks around 9–12 weeks, then falls. Typical ranges (mIU/mL) by gestational week include 3 weeks 5–50; 4 weeks 5–426; 5 weeks 18–7,340; 6 weeks 108–56,500; 7–8 weeks 7,650–229,000; 9–12 weeks 25,700–288,000. Single values need clinical context.

Yes. A blood hCG test can confirm pregnancy earlier and more accurately than a urine test. Qualitative tests detect hCG presence; quantitative (beta‑hCG) measures levels and can estimate gestational age or monitor growth. Levels typically rise every 48–72 hours in early pregnancy. Single values don’t always predict viability; timing, recent pregnancy, medications, or rare conditions can affect results.

No — a single beta‑hCG cannot definitively confirm miscarriage. Diagnosis uses serial quantitative hCG trends (typically measured 48–72 hours apart): a healthy early pregnancy usually rises substantially (commonly ~35–66% over 48 hours). Falling or plateauing hCG suggests a failed pregnancy, but ultrasound evidence (absence of an intrauterine sac or fetal heartbeat at set thresholds) is required for confirmation.

Higher-than-expected hCG can suggest a multiple pregnancy, since twins often produce more hCG than a singleton. However, hCG varies widely with gestational age and between individuals, and levels overlap between single and multiple pregnancies. Incorrect dating, molar pregnancy, or lab variation can affect results. Ultrasound is the reliable way to confirm twins; follow-up blood tests and an early scan are recommended.
