Basic Female Hormones

Key female hormones include estrogen (mainly estradiol) — drives breast and reproductive tract development and regulates the menstrual cycle; progesterone — prepares and maintains the uterine lining for pregnancy; FSH and LH — pituitary hormones controlling follicle growth and triggering ovulation; prolactin — stimulates milk production; and small amounts of testosterone support libido and muscle mass.

Estrogen is often called the “beauty hormone.” It helps preserve skin thickness, elasticity and hydration by supporting collagen and hyaluronic acid production, and influences hair and nail growth and fat distribution. Falling estrogen levels—such as during menopause—lead to thinner, drier skin, reduced collagen, more wrinkles, and changes in hair and nails.

Ranges vary by age and lab.

There is no “female sperm” in humans. Females produce ova (egg cells), the female gametes. Ova are large, non-motile haploid cells that carry maternal DNA and support early embryo development after fertilization by a sperm. In some species or hermaphroditic organisms, individuals may produce both sperm and eggs, but in humans the female gamete is called an ovum.

Yes — estrogen can increase breast size by promoting growth of ductal tissue, fat deposition and fluid retention, especially during puberty, pregnancy or estrogen therapy. The degree varies widely with genetics, body weight and age; breasts often shrink after menopause or when hormones stop. Estrogen alone has limits and outcomes differ between individuals.
