Bahia Grass

Bahia grass is also known by its scientific name Paspalum notatum. Often called bahiagrass, it includes common cultivars such as Pensacola and Argentine bahiagrass. This warm-season perennial turf and forage grass is native to South America and widely planted in subtropical regions for pastures, erosion control, and low-maintenance lawns because of its hardiness and drought tolerance.

Bahia grass (Paspalum notatum) is a hardy warm‑season turf and pasture grass valued for drought and low‑fertility tolerance, erosion control, deep roots, and low maintenance. Its coarse texture, clumping habit, and seed stalks make it less suitable for fine lawns, heavy traffic, or shady sites. For grazing it provides durable cover but has moderate nutritive value and can become invasive without management.

Bahia is low‑maintenance, drought‑ and poor‑soil tolerant with a coarse texture and slow recovery, suited to low‑input pastures and roadside areas. Bermuda has a finer texture, forms a dense, wear‑ and recovery‑resistant turf ideal for lawns and sports fields but requires more sunlight, mowing and fertilizer. Choose Bahia for minimal care; choose Bermuda for high‑traffic, manicured turf.

Treat Bahia grass allergy with avoidance (stay indoors during high pollen, use air conditioning/HEPA filters, avoid mowing or wear a mask), symptomatic meds such as oral antihistamines and intranasal corticosteroids, nasal saline rinses, and short-term decongestants if needed. St. Augustine grass is a dense, coarse‑textured, stoloniferous lawn grass that tolerates shade and salt but needs regular watering, fertilization and higher maintenance. Bahia grass is a coarser, upright, drought‑ and low‑fertility tolerant grass suited to hot, sandy soils; it requires less care, tolerates drought and heat better but performs poorly in shade and can be bunchier and less carpet‑like.

Bahia grass grows best in warm, humid climates of the southeastern U.S. and similar subtropical regions. It thrives in full sun, well-drained sandy or loamy soils, tolerates drought, low fertility, acidic soils, and moderate salt, but performs poorly in heavy clay, poorly drained or shaded areas and cold winters. Low-maintenance, ideal for pastures, roadsides, and erosion control.
