Aspergillus IgE Antibody

The Aspergillus IgE antibody test is a blood test that measures IgE antibodies specific to Aspergillus species (commonly A. fumigatus). It helps detect allergic sensitization and conditions such as allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis or Aspergillus-associated asthma. Elevated specific IgE supports allergy but must be interpreted with symptoms, total IgE, skin testing, and imaging to confirm diagnosis and guide management.

Detectable Aspergillus antibodies mean your immune system has encountered Aspergillus. Depending on the antibody type, this can indicate past exposure or colonization (IgG), allergic sensitization or allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (IgE), or support diagnosis of chronic or invasive disease in the right clinical context. Results need correlation with symptoms, imaging and cultures—discuss further testing and treatment with your clinician.

A high IgE level usually indicates allergic sensitization, common in asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema, or parasitic infections. It may also reflect immune disorders (such as hyper‑IgE syndrome) or chronic inflammation. Elevated IgE warrants further evaluation with history, specific IgE or skin testing, and sometimes parasite or immune work‑up. Management focuses on trigger avoidance, symptom control (antihistamines, inhaled steroids), targeted therapies and clinician review.

Elevated Aspergillus-specific IgE indicates an IgE-mediated allergic response. Symptoms include asthma exacerbations with wheeze, cough (often productive), breathlessness, chest tightness, and increased mucus. Upper-airway signs: nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy/runny nose, sinus pressure and nasal polyps. In more severe forms (ABPA) patients may have fever, fleeting lung infiltrates, brownish mucus plugs, hemoptysis and progressive bronchiectasis.

Symptoms of Aspergillus infections vary by type. Common respiratory signs include persistent cough, wheeze, shortness of breath, chest pain, fever and coughing up blood. Chronic forms cause weight loss, fatigue and recurrent lung infections. Allergic disease leads to worsening asthma, nasal congestion and sinus symptoms. Invasive aspergillosis causes high fever unresponsive to antibiotics and organ-specific signs such as headache, visual changes or skin lesions.

Yes. Fungal infection or exposure—especially when it provokes an allergic reaction (for example allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis or fungal sensitisation)—can raise total and fungus-specific IgE levels. Chronic colonisation or recurrent fungal contact in predisposed, atopic individuals commonly elevates IgE. Testing for total and specific IgE helps identify this, and treating the underlying condition can reduce IgE-driven symptoms.
