Aspergillus fumigatus,

Aspergillus fumigatus causes aspergillosis, a range of illnesses from allergic reactions (allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and sinusitis) to chronic pulmonary aspergillosis and aspergilloma (fungus ball). In people with weakened immune systems it can cause invasive aspergillosis, a serious, potentially life‑threatening infection that can spread from the lungs to other organs. Symptoms depend on form and range from cough and wheeze to fever and breathing difficulty.

Aspergillus fumigatus is ubiquitous in soil and decaying vegetation and isn’t a typical foodborne mold but can contaminate stored plant-derived foods. It may be found on grains and cereals, nuts and spices, dried fruits, coffee beans, and poorly stored bread or animal feed. It thrives in warm, damp, poorly ventilated conditions; inhalation of airborne spores from contaminated material poses the main health risk.

Treatment depends on disease form and host factors; for invasive Aspergillus fumigatus infection, first-line antifungal therapy is voriconazole (IV/oral). Alternatives include isavuconazole or liposomal amphotericin B; echinocandins are used in combination or as salvage. Chronic or allergic forms are managed with long-term oral triazoles (itraconazole/voriconazole) and corticosteroids for ABPA; surgery may be needed for symptomatic aspergilloma.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a common airborne fungus found worldwide. It grows in soil, compost, leaf litter, decaying vegetation, stored grain and other organic matter. Indoors it occurs in dust, HVAC systems, damp buildings, potted plant soil and construction or renovation sites where spores become airborne. It’s especially important around hospitals and people with weakened immune systems because inhaled spores can cause infection.

Early signs of aspergillosis depend on the type but commonly include persistent cough, wheeze or worsening asthma, shortness of breath, fever and chest pain. Other early symptoms can be nasal congestion or sinus pain with facial pressure, blood in sputum (haemoptysis), fatigue and unexplained weight loss. Invasive disease progresses rapidly in immunocompromised people, so seek prompt medical attention.

Avoid moldy or spoiled foods and items prone to fungal growth: blue or aged cheeses, dried fruits, nuts and seeds (especially peanuts and pistachios), stale bread and baked goods, improperly stored grains, flours and cereals, and home‑fermented or unpasteurized products. Discard foods with visible mold and store pantry items dry, cool, and sealed. Immunocompromised people should be extra cautious.
